The acclaimed Australian documentary “I Am a Girl” explores this question from the standpoint of six girls from six countries around the world, examining the reality of what it means to grow up female in their world today. The Mott Community College 3P Club and American Association of Women in Community Colleges Chapter will screen “I Am a Girl” on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. as part of their Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities. The screening will be in the Regional Technology Center (RTC) Auditorium on the Flint campus at at 1700 Robert T. Longway, Flint, and will be followed by a presentation of one MCC student’s survival story. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Representatives from the YWCA will be available for one-on-one confidential conversations immediately following the film. Meet 14-year-old Kimsey from Cambodia, forced to sell her virginity at 12; Aziza from Afghanistan, who will be shot if she goes to school; Breani, a teen living in a ghetto of NYC and dreaming of stardom; Katie from Australia, who is recovering from a suicide attempt; Habiba from Cameroon, betrothed to a man 20 years her senior; and Manu from Papua New Guinea, about to become a mother at 14 following her first sexual encounter. As they come of age in the way their culture dictates, witness remarkable heart-warming stories of resilience, bravery and humor. “I Am a Girl” was nominated for four awards by the Australian Film Institute, including Best Feature Length Documentary, and one award from the Australian Screen Editors.
