Welcome to Abington Medical Centre
Abington Medical Centre serves parts of the Borough of Northampton.
We are a GP Training Practice, this means that we have a GP Registrar working at the practice.
This is a fully qualified doctor who has been working in hospital medicine, and is in training to
become a GP. Part of the training involves the recording of consultations which are then assessed
with the GP trainer, if your consultaion is to be recorded you will be informed of this when
booking your appointment and asked to sign a consent form prior to your consultation.
Our team includes seven GPs, one nurse practitioner three practice nurses, health care assistant,
counsellor, midwife, health visitors, district nurses as well as our practice manager, deputy
practice manager and switchboard and reception staff. We offer a full general practice service
and run specialist clinics for children and pregnant women, diabetes and asthma sufferers and for
patients needing minor surgery.
We will use our surgery website as a way of presenting all our patients with up to date
information relating to our practice. We will keep it current with any news, developments &
details that are relevant to the practice & our patients.
As well as a source of information about our practice, the staff and the services we provide, we
hope you use the website as a useful resource taking advantage of the links to other reliable
websites for health related information. When there is topical health information we will also add
this to the pages here.
Have a look around our site and please do send us some feedback. We can use your thoughts to
improve our online services & further develop the website to make it a more useful, practical
application for our patients.

Emergency Appointments
All emergency appointments will be dealt with by our qualified Nurse Practitioners who are able
to diagnose and prescribe and have access to a GP at all times. Please help us to help you by
booking appointments appropriately.
How to make an Appointment
Please call our appointments line on 0844 477 3858 to book a routine appointment with the
practice nurse or GP of your choice.
We use a lo-cost telephone number for our appointments line which will cost you approximately
4 pence a minute, depending on your telephone provider.
Some of our practice nurses are able to treat and prescribe for minor illnesses, so you may not
need to book an appointment with a GP.
You may not need an appointment for a prescription or sick note. Our reception staff can help
you if you are uncertain about this or if you are uncertain about what clinic, nurse or doctor you
should see.
You may be able to book an appointment up to 4 weeks in advance for the nurse or GP of your
choice. All urgent same day appointments will be dealt with by our nurse practitioners who are
able to diagnose and prescribe and have access to a GP at all times.
GP appointments are also available for medicals such as HGV, elderly driver fitness to drive and
fostering. Please contact the surgery for more information as these services may involve a charge
both for the medical and for failure to cancel the booked appointment. Please call the
appointments line and we will be able to advise you.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying
charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought
it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription
prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
NHS charges
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
prescriptions are free of charge.



Prescription (per item): £7.40
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
3-month PPC: £29.10
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items
in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

should last about an hour.
You will be seen regularly throughout your pregnancy either at the practice or at the local
hospital, or both.
Child Health and Immunisation
Health visitors hold immunisation clinics. All new babies are invited for regular check-ups from
eight weeks old.

diagnosed with diabetes.

phlebotomists will take the samples required and they will be sent to Northampton General
Hospital where they will be processed and the results will be forwarded to your doctor.
Stopping smoking
Run by our nurses and health care assistant, these appointments give advice and support to
patients trying to give up smoking.
Physiotherapy
Patients over 16 years can now self refer to physiotherapy. If under 16 or if you are already
under a consultant or if you have a respiratory or neurological problem then this is not possible
Patient Registration
We are currently accepting new patients.
How to Register
We welcome new patients living within our practice boundary. To register please request a new
patient registration pack we will require you to have confirmation of your address preferably in
the form of a bank statement for the last three months and photographic identification such as a
passport or driving licence in order to register we will then give you the forms to complete whilst
you are in the surgery and give straight back to the receptionist.
Patients moving into the area for a short while, that is less than 3 months, are able to register as a
temporary resident and all patients who require 'immediate and neccessary' treatment are able to
