Foundation Year 1 post in General surgery
The F1 doctor is involved in the care of elective and emergency general surgical
patients.
Educational Opportunities

team, infection control, palliative care and oncology

 Ethical issues surrounding treatment of disabled and elderly such as DNR
orders, nutrition and end of life issues
Specific Skills
 Venepuncture
 Urinary catheterisation
 Suturing techniques
 Assisting in operations and undertaking minor operations with supervision
 Resuscitation of the acutely ill.
 Post operative care
The F1 trainee will spend one month at a time with a nominated consultant. At
any on time there will also be a ‘floating’ surgical F1 trainee who will cover the
duties of other F1 trainees who may be on nightshift or annual leave / sick leave.
The F1 trainees will also undertake day-time and out-of-hours on-call work on the
Integrated Emergency Care Centre admitting and treating unselected acute
medical, surgical and orthopaedic emergencies under appropriate clinical
supervision.
On Call Duties

and orthopaedic emergencies under appropriate clinical supervision.
The on call frequency is:

1 in 10.5 weekday daytime 0800 – 2030 (2 on-call shifts in every 21
weekdays)
o 0800 – 1600 based on EAU/A&E depending on workload
o 1600 – 2030 providing ward cover for Wards 1, 2 and 3

1 in 8 weekend daytime 0800 – 2030
o providing ward cover for Surgical/Orthopaedic/O&G Wards 1, 2 and
3
o attendance on general surgical consultant morning ward rounds
o assessment of surgical patients in EAU/A&E (with appropriate
support)
o providing support in theatre if requested by the senior surgical
team.

1 in 10.5 split weeks of nightshift (Monday to Thursday 2000 – 0830 and
Friday to Sunday 2000 – 0830).
o Working as a key member of the hospital at night team in
conjunction with the HAN coordinator, orthopaedic/surgical on-call
teama and medical on-call team
