OPEN HOUSE
Thank you to the students and their families who attended our Open House on Thursday,
September 20th. The winner of our Passport Draw was Makayla Floyd!!
ASSEMBLY RECOGNITION
As part of our school assembly held on Friday, September 28th we recognized the following
students:
Cooperation: Danika White, Elly Lowe, David Delill, Jesse McKay and Connor Jackson
Effort in Mathematics: Dathan Greer
Effort in Language Arts: Ayden Greer
ERIC WALTERS
Eric Walters, an award winning Canadian author, will be visiting Port Edward School on
Tuesday, October 2nd beginning at 12:30pm. Since his first novel Mr. Walters has literally
exploded on the children's young adult literature scene. He has published over sixty novels.
These novels have been enthusiastically received by children and young adults and critically
acclaimed by teachers, reviewers and parents. Mr. Walters novels have won more than 80
awards including eleven separate children's choice awards. Mr. Walters has also moved beyond
merely writing for children. He has presented to over 1,400,000 children across the country. His
presentations blend drama, storytelling, audience participation and interaction. He not only
wants his audience to hear about his books, but about the writing process and how they can
become more excited about writing.
Students who go home for lunch are asked to please be back by 12:15pm this day, as we
would like to start the event at 12:30pm.
GARY ANAKA: The Magical Teenage Brain
Gary Anaka, a Presenter and Brain-Based Learning Facilitator will be at Charles Hays
Secondary School Multipurpose Room on Tuesday, October 2nd at 7:00pm-8:30pm to conduct
a workshop for teenagers and their parents. Gary offers unique, passionate, high-energy
workshops. Please bring your brain, a pen, and a something for note-taking. There will be a
door prize for students and parents.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITES
We welcome our After School Activities Coordinator, Mr. Deep Gill!! Deep will begin his
program for the Grade 1 to Grade 5 students on Wednesday, October 3rd!! Sign up sheets
are available each month in the school office if you would like your child to participate in these
activities. The forms must be completed each month and returned to the school, as the
activities change regularly.
THANKSGIVING
The students and staff will be preparing and eating a Thanksgiving lunch together on
Friday, October 5th.
The school will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, October 8th.
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Our parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday,
October 18th. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 pm on these days for the meetings. Please
contact Tasha Kellough between 9:00am-12:00pm at 628-3551 to book an appointment time
with your child’s teacher
POPCORN DAY
We will be holding our first Popcorn sale of the school year at recess on Wednesday, October
17th. We are looking for parent/guardian volunteers to help in the morning to pop and bag the
popcorn so that we are ready by recess time. Contact the school or come by at 9:00 am.
POPCORN will be sold for .50 cents a bag.

THE GREAT BRITISH COLUMBIA SHAKE OUT
Get ready to shake out, Thursday, October 18th! Drop! Cover! Hold On! Our school will be
taking part in this province wide earthquake drill. All residents, agencies, businesses and
organizations across British Columbia are encouraged to take part in the largest earthquake
drill!
NON-INSTRUCTIONAL DAY
There will be no school for students on Friday, October 19th.
CLOTHING
As the weather gets colder, please ensure that your child has a warm coat, proper footwear for
the weather, a hat and gloves so that they can play outside as the weather permits and also a
change of clothing.
DISTRICT PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
Are you interested in attending a parenting conference in Prince George?
The District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) has funding to support the attendance of
parents to the 2012 BCCPAC Northern Regional Conference which is scheduled for Oct
19th (evening) and Oct 20th (8am to 5pm). Some of the topics currently in the program
are: Personalized Learning: In Depth Dialogue, Anti-bullying, Aboriginal Education,
Speaking Up!, Comprehensive School Health and much, much more. Here is the

For more information or to volunteer, please contact DPAC Secretary, Andrea Lorette, at
