ITINERARY – TRIP TO JAPAN
APRIL, 2009
Wednesday 15 April
Meet at the Group Check-in Counter at 6.30am
(Group Check-in Counter is to the far left of the airport as you look at it
from the carpark)
Depart Auckland on NZ99 at 8.30am
Arrive Narita 4.50pm local time
Transfer by private bus from Narita Airport to Hotel for 1
night:

Visit Tokyo Tower if the plane is on time and there are no
delays (and the weather is OK)
Thursday 16 April
Breakfast at hotel (you can take your breakfast coupon
down to the breakfast room and have your breakfast, but
do not leave the hotel.)
Luggage to be taken to Bell Desk by 7.30am but make
sure you have your sightseeing info and maps with
you
Lunch to be purchased from nearby convenience store to
eat later (we will do this as a group – do not go on your
own)
8.00am Luggage trucked from Hotel to:
Host Girls’ High School
Tokyo 120
Sightseeing in Tokyo.
Purchase Rail Pass (swipe card) at Hamamatsucho
station for all train journeys. Keep swipe card in the card
holder firmly attached to the inside of your bag.
Train to Ueno Park (Y160) to see the cherry blossoms,
lake and shrine
Subway to Asakusa (Y160) – to see Kaminarimon Gate
and Nakamisedori
Subway to Kabukiza (Y190) – Kabuki Theatre
Walk to Ginza (about 400m) to see San-ai Building (round
landmark building, Ginza Crossing, Mitsukoshi
Department store, Mikimoto Pearls etc)
Subway to Ueno-Hirokoji (Y160) (Ameyoko and
Okachimachi – an area known for very reasonably priced
goods)
Subway (or walk) to Akihabara (JR line Y160) – an area
famous for electronic goods
Subway (Y190) to Kita-Senju – the closest station to
Host Girls’ High School to arrive by 4.00pm
(Lunch to be eaten some time during the day)
Meet host sister, collect luggage and go home.
Friday 17 April
Meet at school for another day of sightseeing in Tokyo
Make sure you have your sightseeing info and maps
with you
Subway (Y190) to Nijubashimae to see the Imperial
Palace and gardens (residence of the Emperor)
Subway (Y190) to Shibuya to see the statue of Hachiko
and shopping (109 etc)
Yamanote line (Y130) to Harajuku – trendy teenage area
for shopping
Subway (Y230) back to Kita-Senju (School) by 4.00pm
Packed lunch provided by host family
Saturday 18 April
Sunday 19 April
Homestay with Host family
Monday 20 April
School Programme (details to follow later)
Wear full school uniform (bring shorts and t shirt if
there is a physical activity in the programme.
Tuesday 21 April
Full day trip to Nikko by coach leaving Host at 8.00am
and returning at 5.00pm
Includes Toshogu shrine, Kegon waterfall, Lake Chuzenji,
Irohazaka zig zag slope (packed lunch provided by
homestay)
Wednesday 22 April
School Progamme
Wear full school uniform (bring shorts and t shirt if
there is a physical activity in the programme.
Thursday 23 April
Full day visit to Tokyo Disneyland
Arrive at school by7.50am
Subway (Y520) to Maihama
Disney Passport (unlimited rides on all attractions)
included.
Packed lunch provided by host family
Subway (Y520) to Kita-Senju. Return by 6.00pm
Friday 24 April
Full day excursion to Kamakura departing 8.30-9.00 and
returning 4.00pm
Visit the Daibutsu (Big Buddha) and Hasedera Temple
Afternoon – time for shopping in Komachi-doori
Packed lunch provided by host family
Saturday 25 April
Sunday 26 April
Homestay with Host family
Monday 27 April
School Programme including Farewell Party
Wear full school uniform (bring shorts and t shirt if
there is a physical activity in the programme.
Tuesday 28 April
Meet at school with your luggage between 7.30am
and 7.45am. Luggage trucked from school to
accommodation in Kyoto (truck arrives 7.30am).
Make sure you have everything you need for the day
including sightseeing information and maps of Kyoto.
You won’t have access to your luggage until 8pm
Subway (Y310) to Tokyo
Travel by Bullet Train Nozomi Super Express #217 to
Kyoto
Departure Time:

Arrive in Kyoto:
11.41pm
Packed lunch from host family to eat on train
Travel by coach to Kiyomizudera – Walk up to temple
via streets lined with traditional pottery shops and
souvenir shops. Try the pure water!
Transfer to Shijo-Kawaramachi (central Kyoto)
Rest of afternoon (from about 3.00pm) and early evening
spent in Kyoto centre.
Dinner to be purchased in the city (money allowance for
dinner included)
After dinner walk along Pontocho alley, traditional street,
lined with little bars, red lanterns and possibly some
‘maiko/geisha’

Luggage to be transferred separately by truck to Kansai
airport.
9.30 am Coach transfer to Kinkakuji (Golden Pavillion)
and Ryoanji (Zen garden)
Coach transfer to Iwatayama Monkey Park
Lunch and dinner to be purchased (money allowance for
both meals included)
Transfer to Kyoto station – afternoon (about 2-3 hours) at
leisure around Kyoto station underground shopping
center. Opportunity to go up Kyoto Tower (admission
included)
Transfer from Kyoto station to Kansai International Airport
by Haruka Express #49 at 5.45pm arriving Kansai Airport
at 7.06pm
Depart Kansai on NZ90 at 9.15pm
Thursday 30 April
Arrive Auckland 11.10am.
