UCT STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS 2010

The 2010 Student Leadership Awards are a partnership between the offices of the ViceChancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor: Student Affairs, the Executive Director: Department of
Student Affairs and the Career Development Programme in the Centre for Higher Education
Development in partnership with their Employer Partner Programme.
The core purpose of the awards is to acknowledge the outstanding and selfless contribution
made by student leadership in advancing the Vision, Mission and Values of UCT.
ELIGIBILITY, CRITERIA, CATEGORIES OF AWARDS
1.
All UCT students serving in recognised UCT student structures may be nominated. These structures
are: SRC, Student Assembly, Faculty Councils, House Committees, Societies and Organisations,
Sports Codes, Student Media organisations (Varsity and UCT Radio), and community development
organisations (SHAWCO, RAG, etc.) For the Team of the Year Award only formally recognised student
structures may be nominated.
2. Nominees must have fulfilled the following generic criteria:
2.1. Promoted the Vision, Mission and Values of UCT (Appendix 1), and a culture of learning both
internally and externally.
2.2. Demonstrated social responsibility, and/or have made a significant contribution to addressing issues
like Hiv/Aids, the environment, etc.
2.3. Demonstrated excellent leadership qualities, including exemplary leadership.
2.4. Promoted diversity, inclusiveness and transformation.
2.5. Been team-oriented and created opportunities for a team to grow and develop.
2.6. Maintained good academic standing.
3.
CATEGORIES, VALUE OF AWARDS and SPECIFIC CRITERIA
Please note: In making these Awards the Selection Committee will pay particular attention to the nominee’s
achievements in leadership for the period: September 2009 to September 2010.
3.1. The Vice Chancellor’s Student Leader Award (R 5 000 prize); the Deputy Vice Chancellor’s Student
Leader Award (R 4 000 prize); the Executive Director: DSA’s Student Leader Award
(R 3 000 prize) has the following criteria:
a. A nominee must have played an exceptional role in promoting the Vision, Mission and Values of
UCT both internally and externally.
b. A nominee must have played an exceptional role in promoting gender and racial equality.
c. A nominee must have been inspirational in promoting student leadership.
d. A nominee must show a clear track record of leadership.
3.2. The UCT Student Team of the Year (R5 000 prize): To qualify, a team must have excelled in
promoting team work, thus creating opportunities for members of both the team and the student
organization to grow. In addition, the team must have played an exceptional role in developing the
student organization concerned.
3.3. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Media (R2 000 prize): To qualify, nominee must have provided
leadership in objective reporting and excelled in print or broadcasting media.
3.4. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Residence (R2 000 prize): To qualify, a nominee must have
played an outstanding role in residence life.

3.5. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Societies (R2 000 prize): To qualify, a nominee must have
done outstanding work in her/his society.
3.6. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Sport Codes (R2 000 prize): To qualify, a nominee must have
been an excellent leader in a sport code, SASSU or on the field.
3.7. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Community/ Development Organisations (R2 000): To qualify,
a nominee must have made an outstanding contribution in one of the development organisations,
such as RAG, SHAWCO, or outstanding community work through other UCT organisations.
3.8. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Undergraduate Student Faculty Councils (R2 000 prize): To
qualify for this award, a nominee must have done outstanding work for his/her undergraduate
faculty council and/or assisted students in the faculty.
3.9. Most Outstanding Student Leader in Post graduate Student Faculty Councils (R2 000 prize): To
qualify for this award, a nominee must have done outstanding work for his/her postgraduate faculty
council and/or assisted students in the faculty.
APPLICATION PROCESS – Contact Mr. Jerome September

The Department of Student Affairs administers the Awards process, and is also responsible for setting
up the adjudicating panel. The panel’s decisions are final and no appeals will be considered after an
award has been made.
UCT Students and Staff (excluding the staff on the adjudicating panel or their nominees) are invited to
nominate student leaders for an award or awards in the categories listed above. Nominations may be
through self-nomination. Members of the adjudication panel may not serve as referees for nominees. All
nominations must be completed as outlined in 4.1- 4.2 below:
4.1. Complete the attached nomination form. (See contact details below should you require more
forms).
4.2. Attach a brief CV, highlighting achievements for the period September 2009 to September 2010, but
not excluding any prior involvement and achievements.
4.3. Please provide two referees reports, one of which must be from a peer. The referees report must
describe the nominee’s qualities and achievements as a leader.
4.4. Should you need assistance with compiling your CV and/or your application, then please contact the
Career Development Programme in Hoerikwaggo for assistance. Please note, you may need to
make an appointment for this.
4.5. Submit the nomination form, a detailed CV and References by 16:00 on 14 October 2010 to

4.6. Successful nominees will receive prizes at an Awards Ceremony to be held on
Thursday, 21 October 2010 from 18.00 to 20.00 in the Kramer Quad, Middle Campus,
UCT.
4.7. Student structures are invited to send members of the Executive Committee to attend the
Ceremony. Please RSVP by Tuesday, 19 October 2010.
4.8. Members of the University community are invited to attend the Awards Ceremony.
