On chart paper have the following questions ready: Can you name someone you consider a leader? What makes him/her a leader? What do leaders do? What qualities do good leaders have? In small groups students will discuss these questions and chart the answers for a class discussion. As you have the class discussion, lead them to the unit question through facilitation. How can individual people affect communities and influence change? Instructional Input: (Line) Modeled/Guided Practice Place students into small groups and assign each group one leader to research. Students will collect information on their leader to fill out the Texas Leader graphic organizer (attached). Leaders: Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Mirabeau Lamar, and Anson Jones. Independent Practice: (Sinker) Each group will produce a brochure for their leader. They will present the information about their leader to the other groups. The groups not presenting will use a note taking organizer to record information and to learn about the other leaders. (i.e. Houston group will present to Lamar and Jones while Lamar and Jones take notes to learn about Houston.)
