Math 6 with Ms. Laila Muhammad Mustangs Team Textbook Big Ideas Math 6 Textbook and Record and Practice Journal Description Math 6 is a Pre-Algebra course intended to prepare students for enrollment in Algebra 1 in the eighth grade. In Math 6, students will learn to apply rational numbers and equations to solve real-world problems. Students will probe: How is mathematics used to model and describe events and relationships in my life? Students will be required to take the Virginia SOL test for Sixth Grade Mathematics at the end of the school year. Units to be covered…pacing will be adjusted as necessary. First Quarter 1. E 0-59 0 * Quarterly grades will be based on the following weighted scale: Tests Quizzes Classwork Homework 50% 25% 15% 10% * The final grade will be the average of the four quality points for the quarterly grades. Testing Chapter tests will be given at the end of each chapter, approximately every 3 weeks. A variety of other assessments will be given weekly. Countywide assessments will be given quarterly and serve as preparation for the Standards of Learning end-of-course test. Quarterly County assessments will not count as a grade. Homework Students will be assigned homework four to five nights per week. Regular practice builds confidence and success, and homework completion is an important part of a student’s class preparation. Homework, with all work shown, is due at the beginning of class. Students start with an overall homework grade of 100 points. Missing homework will result in a deduction of 5 points per missing assignment and must be submitted the following day. Some homework assignments will be collected and graded. I will always let students know ahead of time if a homework assignment will be graded. Class Organization and Materials Each student is required to maintain a graph paper spiral notebook containing class notes and homework. A math binder will contain important math resource handouts, returned tests and quizzes and a supply of graph paper. Students should bring their spiral and a #2 pencil to class each day. The Record and Practice Journals will be kept in the classroom. Each student was issued a textbook to keep at home. Calculators Students may use calculators at home and on some tests and quizzes; however, calculators should only be used as a way to check work. They do not take the place of showing work. Much of the work in this class will be done by hand to develop and strengthen skills and concepts. Absences If a student is absent, he or she is encouraged to contact a study buddy to find out what was covered and assigned in class that day. You may also check Blackboard where I have a homework blog. The textbook and its many resources can be accessed electronically. Take the initiative to follow up with your teacher(s) after an extended absence to catch up on what you missed. Extra Help I am available every day at lunch time for students to come in and receive additional help. Please take the initiative to seek extra help when it’s needed. Your teachers are here to help you learn.
