(922-2707) Fax 922-8644 September 12, 2014 Dear Parents/Guardians, As we start the new academic year, please be reminded of our theme for the year: “Nothing Less Than the Best”, as we continue our focus on higher expectations and continuous improvement. Calendar/Meetings Your child should have received a calendar of the year’s events for your information. You may also shortly view the calendar on the College website at www.stgc.org. Please take careful note of the scheduled standardized unit test and encourage your child/ward to prepare well. Parents/guardians of fifth form students are asked to attend an important meeting on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 8:00a.m. in the Abe Issa auditorium and parents/guardians of fourth form students are asked to attend a meeting on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. The first Home School Association meeting for the academic year will take place on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 4:30p.m. in the Abe Issa Auditorium. Please make every effort to attend. JUTC Card Service On Tuesday, September 16, 2014, the JUTC will visit the College to offer their services to students after school. They will “top up” Smart cards as well as issue new ones. Please have your child/ward bring additional money if they would like to access this service. Heritage Day Celebration On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, we will be celebrating Heritage Day. All students are expected to be in attendance at 7:45 a.m. as usual, for a full day of school. Students who are absent must provide an explanation in writing from their parent/guardian on their return. Failure to do so may affect their immediate re-admittance to class. Students should be in full school uniform. However, they may wear hats, ties, badges, wristbands, belts and other decorations on their uniforms, in all three colours of the Jamaican flag, and no other colours. The rest of the uniform remains unchanged. Students who are not attired appropriately will be sent home. Mid Term Holiday We will break for the mid-term on Thursday, October 16, 2014. Classes resume on Wednesday, October 22, 2013. Fifth and Sixth Form CXC Recommendations On Tuesday, October 21, 2014 we will be having Parent/Teachers’ Day for fifth and sixth forms only. First to fourth form students will not attend school on that day. Mid-term progress reports for fifth and sixth form students will be distributed during the day at the office of the Upper School Vice Principal. Parents/guardians of fifth and sixth form student must visit the campus between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:00p.m. to meet with your child’s/ward’s teachers and secure recommendations for the upcoming CXC examinations. No classes will be held on this day, however, your child (in uniform) must accompany you and must bring along the mid-term report. Parking will be available at your own risk in the parking lot at the front of the school and at Emmet Park. Other Matters Please take careful note of the following: In light of recent concerns regarding copying of CXC SBAs and IAs, it is important to emphasize for your child/ward, the importance of honesty. Please discuss with them carefully the dangers and consequences of plagiarism and fraudulent behaviour. Extreme sanctions will be applied to any student who participates in copying work from other students of STGC, other schools, samples provided by teachers, or any other source without giving due credit. Please ensure that your child/ward completes all assignments. Please ensure that your child/ward is early for school every day, and that he/she wears his/her STGC Student ID and house pin to school each day, to avoid being sent home and other sanctions. We ask that all students be off the campus by 5:00 p.m. in the afternoons. Students who are here at that time and not involved in a school-sanctioned extra activity are asked to wait to be collected at the front of the school close to the security post within the gates. Students should not wait in the parent parking lot at the front of the school as we cannot guarantee their safety there. We are at the start of the Manning Cup season. We ask that on home match days, if students are not staying for the match, that they be collected at the Emmet Park gate as the North Street entrance may be congested and we charge a fee there for entry to the matches. Fixtures may be viewed on our website, but first round home matches are scheduled for September 15 and 26, 2014, and October 4, 2014. We look forward to a great school year, with home and school working together positively, to provide the best opportunity for your child/ward to excel. Together we can accomplish so much, ad majorem Dei gloriam. Yours truly, St. George’s College Margaret Campbell (Mrs.) Principal
