Grade: 9th Grade Course: American History Discipline: Social Studies Additional Course Information: Course Description 1 credit. Required. Objectives: Unit A 2 (Unit 1) Civil Rights in America during Reconstruction Local Objective Students will analyze the impact of the 13th, 14th & 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Students will differentiate between what was the intended outcome of each Amendment & what the actual result was of each Amendment. Students will discover how the South found ways around compliance with each of these Amendments. Unit A 1 (Unit 1) Reconstruction Local Objective Students will compare and contrast the major plans for Reconstruction following the Civil War including President Lincoln's, Radical Republicans & President Johnson's modifications to Lincoln's Plan. Unit B 1 (Unit 2) Westward Expansion & Manifest Destiny Local Objective Students will evaluate a document based question concerning the impact of the following issues on Westward Expansion: Cattle Trails and Cattle Drives (including Cow towns); Indian Wars; Prospecting and the Mining Frontier (including the Shootout at the OK Corral); Sodbusting and the Farming Frontier (including the Settlement of Oklahoma and the Land Rush). Particular attention will be paid to Native Americans. Unit B 2 (Unit 2) Westward Expansion & Manifest Destiny Local Objective Students will evaluate the impact of the following issues on American Imperialism and Westward Expansion: Manifest Destiny; Imperialism; and "White Man's Burden". Unit C 1 (Unit 3) Urbanization, Industrialization & Immigration Local Objective Given a set of photographs, reading and period documents, students will evaluate three major problems for the average immigrant family specifically related to child labor, gender equity, and worker's health in general. Unit D 1 (Unit 4) Imperialism Local Objective Students will analyze U.S. Imperialism in the late 1800s including the key role of Teddy Roosevelt and the Spanish American War. Unit E 1 (Unit 5) Progressivism Local Objective Students will analyze the ideas of Progressivism including reforms and how Progressive ideas changed the American culture and landscape. Students will examine key Progressive leaders and/or groups associated with Progressivism and their impact on the Progressive movement. Unit F 1 (Unit 6) World War I Local Objective Students will analyze chain reaction which led to the beginning of WW I, through the growing U.S. involvement, and finally the struggle to resolve the issues with the Treaty of Versailles. Unit G 1 (Unit 7) Roaring 20s Local Objective Students will analyze the 1920s with the move to Conservatism in America after WWI with the election of 3 consecutive Republican Presidents (Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover), and the role of Prohibition in the development of organized crime, disregard for the law, impact of technology, and the cultural rebellion of youth, and the changing roles of women. Unit H 1 (Unit 8) Great Depression Local Objective Students will analyze the issues and causes which led to the collapse of the U.S. and world economies, the collapse of the stock market, and the beginning of the Great Depression. Students will analyze the root causes of the Great Depression (speculation; overproduction; buying on margin; bank abuses; Republican Conservative philosophy vs. Liberal Democratic philosophy). In addition students will evaluate the effectiveness of the New Deal by charting the primary alphabet soup agencies as to their philosophy (the three R's - Relief, Recovery, and Reform). Unit I 1 (Unit 9) World War II & the Holocaust Local Objective Students will analyze the causes of World War II, America's entry into the War, and the impact of the War and Holocaust. Unit I 2 (Unit 9) World War II Local Objective Students will debate (pro/con) and evaluate the decision of the U.S. and Harry Truman in particular to use the Atomic bomb on Japan to end WWII. Unit J 1(Unit 10) Cold War Local Objective Students will identify the key boundary changes of Europe after WW II, including describing the creation of Communist Satellite nations and the "iron curtain". Unit K 1 (Unit 11) America in the 1950s Local Objective Students will examine American culture in the 1950s. Unit L 1 (Unit 12) Civil Rights Local Objective Students will evaluate the impact of the Brown vs. Board of Education (Topeka, Ks.) decision on integration of public schools in the 1950's including the impact on African Americans. Unit L 2 (Unit 12) Civil Rights Local Objective Students will evaluate the impact of the Civil Rights Movement in America during the 1950s & 1960s on American society. Students will compare & contrast various Civil Rights leaders in American including Martin Luther King, Jr. & Malcolm X. Unit M 1 (Unit 13) 1960s in America Local Objective Students will examine the decade of the 1960s in America. Unit N 1 (Unit 14) Vietnam War Local Objective Students will analyze the causes and impact of the Vietnam War on America. Unit O 1 (Unit 15) Watergate Local Objective Students will arrange the key events chronologically of the fall of Richard Nixon in regard to the Watergate Scandal as well as describing the impact this had on our nation's government.
