Mrs. Joni’s Class
Welcome to School!
Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for choosing our program! This is my 9th
year teaching at the Byron Forest Preserve. I have earned my
Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/Special Education
and hold a Type 04 Illinois Teaching Certificate. I am married to
Nathan, (also known as Mr. Joni!) and I have four great children:
My step-daughter Jessica who is 17, my daughter Ashley who is
15, my son Tyler who is 13 and my daughter Amanda who is 11. I
enjoy sports, GO PACKERS!, fishing, reading, and spending time
with my family.
I am very excited to have your child in my class! This
packet will provide information about classroom procedures,
expectations, and activities. I hope this will be a useful tool for
you and will answer any questions that you may have about
preschool!
If you have any questions that were not addressed in the
packet please feel free to contact me. I will list my contact
information at the bottom of this page. Please do not hesitate to
contact me with any questions or comments. I am so thrilled to
be working together with you this year to ensure success for your
child! It is going to be a GREAT year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Joni Camling

Celebrating Birthdays
We would love to celebrate your child’s birthday in class. If you
would like to provide some kind of treat for your child to share,
that would be wonderful! I will place your child’s name on the
snack list on or close to their birthday. Treats are welcome to be
store bought or home made. Make sure to watch the snack
calendar for any allergies in the class!
Snacks
A snack calendar will be sent home every month. Juice can be
brought with the snack otherwise water will be served. Extra
snacks left from a box that was sent will be saved and used as
“leftovers” in case a snack day is forgotten.
Homework
The Monday-Wednesday-Friday students will receive homework
on Fridays. Children usually love to do homework at this age
especially if they have older siblings. If your child does not want
to do their homework, that is completely fine. If they do send in
their homework, I will place a sticker on it for them and send it
back.
Journals
M-W-F students have a journal in the classroom. The journal is a
collection of a student’s work based on our weekly themes.
Journals will be sent home at the end of the school year.
4
Conferences
Conferences will be held in January for the M-W-F children. The
older children are assessed using a form created by the Byron
School District’s Kindergarten teachers. This information is then
passed onto the teachers so they have an understanding of your
child’s progress upon entering kindergarten. The older children
will also receive a progress report in November and May. The
younger children will be assessed in November and at the end of
the year and that information will be sent home in May.
Parties
We will have a classroom party for Halloween, Christmas, and
Valentine’s Day. Parents are in charge of planning but we are
always here to help! A sign up sheet will come home during the
first weeks of school and a list will be sent home of parents who
have volunteered to help.
Parent Volunteers
There will be opportunities throughout the year for parent
volunteers. This could be anything from making play-doh, to
helping with small groups in the classroom. Letters will be sent
home when these opportunities will be available.
Classroom Library
I have a great book collection in our classroom. Library day for
younger children is on Thursday and on Friday for the older
children. A reminder will be sent home if a book is not returned
by the next library day. All of the books have a label inside that
reads, “Byron Forest Preserve Preschool” Please take extra care
in protecting our classroom’s books from damage/loss. If you are
unable to find a book, please send a gently used book from home
in its place. If you have any books you wish to donate to the
classroom we would always appreciate them. Thank you!
5
Field Trips
We do take a couple of field trips throughout the year. We are
able to use the Byron School Buses for these trips and welcome
any and all parent volunteers. Siblings are welcome as well.
Permission slips will come home well in advance of the trips. The
trips are scheduled in the morning with both am and pm classes
combined. There is no pm preschool on field trip days.
Good Time Tickets
Everyday that a child has a “green” day (in other words no timeout) they receive a ticket. They should save these tickets in a
Ziploc bag that stays in their backpack. The children will be able
to spend their tickets at our “preschool store”. Our store is
stocked with gently used toys. If you wish to donate to our
store, let me know!
Prize Day
When a child attends school and does not receive a time-out for
the week, they get to choose a surprise from the treasure box!
Behavior
Children begin everyday on the green light. If an inappropriate
behavior occurs, a warning will be given to the child and the
child’s name will be moved to the yellow light. If the behavior
continues, the child’s name will move to the red light and they will
sit on the time-out chair. The time-out will last for one minute
per their age. A note will be sent home that day and the child
should be able to discuss with you what the notes are for. Please
understand that usually a request to stop a behavior is given a
few times before a warning is given and several warnings are
given before a time-out is given. A skittle or M&M is awarded for
no warnings or time-outs each day.
