The table below lists the grades which can be awarded for each module: Grade Percentage Grade band Point Value A 80 - 100 4.00 B+ 70 - 79 3.50 B 60 - 69 3.00 B55 - 59 2.75 C+ 50 - 54 2.50 C 40 - 49 2.00 D 35 - 39 1.50 F <35 0.00 G 40+ I X Credits Indicative quality of performance awarded Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No Yes No Yes W NP WH Excellent Very Good Good Above Average Fair Pass Poor Fail Pass in pass/fail module (not used in GPA calculation) Deferral of result Student exempted from the requirements of the module because of previous equivalent learning Withdrew Not Present Withhold result Assessment of Aggregate Performance The aggregate performance of an individual student is represented by the student's Grade Point Average (GPA) in the examination for each stage or semester of the course followed. In order to determine the GPA for a particular student, the following calculation is carried out. (a) A Grade Point Value is assigned to the alphabetic grade a student has gained for each subject (see Table above), (b) The Grade Point Value is multiplied by the Credits (available from the Approved Course Schedule) to arrive at a Grade Credit Score for each subject/module, (c) The Grade Credit Scores are then added together and divided by the credits for the stage or semester to arrive at the GPA. (d) Credits gained as a result of being awarded an X or a G in a module are not included in the calculation of the GPA. Examples of Calculation of GPA To pass a candidate must have 60 credits (unless exemption granted) and a GPA above 2.00 1 Publication date: 01/11/2005 Approved by: Registrar 4RAS04 Target Audience: All staff, students Drafted by: AA&SAM Version: 4RAS04.01 Page 2 of 5 Grade point average (GPA) calculations 1. An increase of the D to a C in a 10 credit module would increase the GPA by 0.08. This on its own would not increase the GPA above 2.00, so the second module could be repeated, or an increase in one module from a D to a C+ or higher must be achieved. 3 Publication date: 01/11/2005 Approved by: Registrar 4RAS04 Target Audience: All staff, students Drafted by: AA&SAM Version: 4RAS04.01 Page 4 of 5 Grade point average (GPA) calculations 4.
