We will meet from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. each day school is in session, Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted in advance. Children who are not picked up by 6:00 p.m. and whose caretaker cannot be reached will be taken to the Tarrant Police Department for pick up and/or Department of Human Resources will be contacted. Purpose of Program: 1. To provide a proper environment for after school study, reading, and completion of homework. 2. To provide personnel who are qualified to help students in problem areas.. 3. To provide both academic and cultural enrichment activities for students. 4. To better utilize school facilities for the benefit of our students, providing a safe, caring atmosphere for students until caregivers are able to pick them up. 5. To provide a healthy, pleasurable, yet challenging experience for students. A typical afternoon in our program will include a healthy snack, a study hall and supervised enrichment activities. Students will be offered up to 60 hours of personalized reading tutoring with Sylvan Learning Center tutors over the course of the year. Examples of enrichment activities are: board games and puzzles, recreation, arts and crafts, writing, book clubs, and more. Supervised fitness and exercise will also be a part of the program. Arrival and Departure All students must come directly to the cafeteria when arriving at the after school program. Upon pick up, parents are required to sign child out and include time of pick up. Go into the office or lunchroom to sign your child out, someone will find your child for you, you do not need to go look for your child. The Coordinator will attend to the sign out sheet and be available for questions or making payment. Please send a note or call Coordinator if someone who is not listed on child’s registration form will be picking up your child. Students in 4th-6th grades at Tarrant Intermediate School are REQUIRED to be transported by school bus to Tarrant Elementary School each afternoon. Walking from Tarrant Intermediate School is not allowed. Please notify program staff if a problem occurs regarding the bus. A permission form is required prior to transport, it is included in this handbook. Parents should pick up all students at Tarrant Elementary School in the afternoon. Days in Session We will be in session on regular school days, when students are in attendance. No Extended Day will be provided during school holidays. S.P.R.OUT Enrichment Center will provide summer and break camps and activities. The YMCA of Birmingham offers services during Christmas Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break. Parents will be provided information as it becomes available. Weather In the event of severe weather of any kind that causes schools to close early, or not be open, Extended Day will also be cancelled. Parents will be notified as soon as possible in this situation. Accident or Illness Parents will be called and informed if their child becomes ill or injured during our hours. He or she will need to be picked up as soon as possible. Personal Belongings All personal belongings should be clearly labeled with your child’s name. Please limit the number of personal items your child brings to school, as we are not responsible for lost or missing items. Students are not allowed to use cell phones at the program. There is a landline phone available in the cafeteria. Please let Coordinator know if you would like your child to “check-in” when he or she arrives at the program. Fees There is a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to be paid at the time of enrollment in the program. Fees are based on a sliding scale: $20.00 per week if Free Lunch $25.00 per week if Reduced Lunch $30.00 per week if Paid Lunch (a nutritious snack is included in price) Children are strongly encouraged to attend every day, especially days that they are scheduled to meet with their Sylvan tutor. Failure to attend regularly will result in the student being dismissed from the program to allow for a student on the waiting list to participate. Drop-ins are strongly discouraged for the purpose of continuity. Drop-ins will not be allowed to participate in activities of the extended day program, for reasons of liability. There is a late pick-up fee of $1.00 per 5 minutes after 6:00 p.m. Tuition can be paid weekly or monthly. Checks should include the child’s name as well as the parent’s name and be made out to Tarrant 21st Century Community Learning Center. The bookkeeper will be in the office or lunchroom each afternoon during Extended Day hours. PLEASE DO NOT COMBINE EXTENDED DAY MONEY WITH OTHER SCHOOL MONEY. Supply money, lunch money, etc., should always be kept separate. Fees need to be paid by Tuesday of each week. Tuition not paid by Tuesday will incur a $5.00 late charge. In accordance with school policy, there will be a $30.00 SERVICE CHARGE for all returned checks. School Visits Parents are encouraged and welcome to come and visit children in the After School program. Come see what we’re doing! If you’d like to volunteer with the program in any way, please let the Site Coordinator or Program Manager know. We’d be happy to have you as part of our team! DISCIPLINE During enrollment, parents are required to sign the form stating that they have (a) read the discipline policy; (b) have reviewed it with their child(ren); and (c) agree to help support the staff in implementing it. All children are expected to respond positively to extended day rules and caregiver directions in order to provide an orderly, safe, and enjoyable environment for “our” children. Students attending the extended day program will follow the same code of conduct established during the regular school day. Inappropriate Behavior: When dealing with a child’s inappropriate behavior, our caregivers will administer the discipline policy consistently and fairly – with courtesy and dignity. Caregivers may not use any form of corporal punishment, intimidating language or actions. In the case of extreme behavior, students will be sent immediately to the Site Coordinator. EXTREME DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR MAY RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL! Minor problems will be handled using the extended care guidelines and parents will be informed. Daily Consequences of Inappropriate Behavior: 1. The first offense will result in a warning issued to the student and reminder of appropriate behavior. 2. The second offense, the student will be reminded of appropriate behavior and “time-out” will be issued. 3. The third offense, the student will be sent to the Site Coordinator. The Site Coordinator will follow the action outlined below: 1. The first referral, the coordinator will warn student and remind student of appropriate behavior. 2. The second referral, the coordinator will call for a conference with the parents and students. 3. The third referral, the coordinator will call for a conference with the parents, Site Coordinator, and the Principal. After investigation, a one to five day suspension will occur if needed. 4. The fourth referral to the coordinator will result in a conference with the coordinator, parents and Principal for possible dismissal of students for the remainder of the semester. Major injury, damage, or destruction: 1. Children who willfully inflict (or attempt to inflict) serious injury to themselves, another child or a care giver will be dismissed from the program immediately. The parent will be called to pick up the child. 2. Children who willfully do major damage or destroy (or attempt to damage or destroy) important materials, equipment, or property will be required to pay for the repair or replacement of these items and will be dismissed from the program. Extended Day Program Expectations: 1. Speak for yourself…not for anyone else. 2. Listen to others…then they will listen to you. 3. Avoid bad words and put-downs…who needs them. 4. Take charge of yourself…you are responsible for you. 5. Show respect…everyone is important. 6. Keep your hands and feet to yourself…no one wants to be hurt. 7. If you mess it up…you clean it up. 8. If you take it out…you put it back. 9. HAVE FUN!!! LEARN SOMETHING NEW!!! Rules for Student Play: 1. Swing straight while seated (not side to side or twisting) 2. Slide from top to ground in the seated position with feet down. Students are not to run up or down the slide (or other equipment) or jump off before reaching the ground. 3. Students may not jump off any structure to the ground. 4. Students may not play on the structures in such a way as to increase their chance of injury to themselves or others. 5. Only soft balls or objects may be thrown. Balls, bats, rocks, other hard objects may not be played with while under our supervision. 6. Fighting or pretending to fight (karate, ninja, etc.) is not an appropriate activity unless it is in the confines of a class taught by the program. 7. Students are expected to use a courteous tone of voice and considerate actions toward others at all times. Supervision will be provided at loading and unloading points, and no stops will be made between the two schools.
