Dear parents and whanau
Our students have recently been involved in a wide range of learning activities arising from class
work that have allowed them to showcase their talents and they have again demonstrated how well
they interact with visitors who provide them with opportunities to learn from those with particular
exceptional skills and interests. We are proud of all their achievements.
The University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools
(ICAS): Congratulations to all the Mokoia students who entered these examinations, entered by
children from all over New Zealand and Australia. The ICAS organisation itself states “Those
students whose achievement was outstanding were rewarded with Certificates of Credit, Distinction
and High Distinction.”
In Science 25 students participated and of these 6 were awarded credit
In Writing 11 students participated and of these 2 were awarded credit
In Spelling 33 students participated and of these 1 was awarded distinction and 8 were awarded
credit.
Well done!!
The Rotorua District Council Schools Speech Competition
Ruby Bathan and Layla Barker were selected to represent Mokoia Intermediate School at this
prestigious event. The adjudicators commented upon the very high standard evident in all the
speeches presented, so much so that an extra award for the first time ever, was presented in order to
acknowledge the work of all the students involved. Congratulations to Ruby Bathan who was
awarded second place.
The Bay of Plenty Science and Technology Fair
Seven Science/Technology exhibits were selected from W4 to be displayed in the Rotorua
Convention Centre on Thursday 28th August and Friday 29th August. Ninety intermediate school
entries were submitted for the judges to peruse and consider. These ninety exhibits come from as far
away as Tauranga and Taupo and all areas in between. The judges were particularly impressed with
the exceptionally high standards and the originality of ideas explored and investigated. The
following students represented Mokoia: Ben Matthews, James Willemsen, Sam Austin, Brandon
Hill, Paige Bushett, Jake Krebs, Micah Lawson, Alex Gaunt, and Laurence Lickfold who received
3rd prize in the IPENZ (Institution of Professional Engineers) Competition
This week Mokoia students had the opportunity to hear the professional storyteller Zebong perform
in our school library. He presented three stories which also included audience participation. After
his morning performance he worked with groups of students on debating skills and creative storywriting. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.
An Olympic Visitor
W4 were very honoured to have Mr. Robbie Eastham, the youngest member of the 2008 Olympic
Team as a guest in our room on Monday afternoon. the students had prepared excellent questions
and Robbie very willingly and enthusiastically shared his experiences and his knowledge, as well as
demonstrating his position when using his rifle in the rile shooting events. I am sure that he has
reinforced the importance setting personal goals, as well as inspiring young student to persevere and
to strive to achieve their ultimate dream!
