Prerequisites: MA 001 or Test placement Credits: 3.5 credits Lecture Hours: 3 hours lecture Lab Hours: 1 hour lab __________________________________________________________________________________________ REQUIRED TEXTBOOK/MATERIALS: Basic College Mathematics: an Applied Approach (Aufmann/Barker/Lockwood) (PCCC custom edition or 9th edition) COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Perform arithmetic operations on the real number system. Use order of operations to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions. Solve linear equations and applications. Plot points in the Cartesian Coordinate System. Interpret statistical graphs. Convert within the US and metric system. Apply the basic concepts of plane geometry. Solve proportion and percent problems. GRADING STANDARD: Final evaluation of class will be based on in-class examinations, attendance (regular class and lab), homework assignments, projects and a final examination. Grades will be assigned as follows: A, A- (superior achievement), B+, B, B- (above average), C+, C (fully acceptable academic performance), and D (passing, but student must repeat the course), F (academic failure). The five in-class tests will be given according to this course calendar schedule. There will be NO make-up tests. Due to this fact, the lowest grade of the five will be dropped from the final average. This test average will comprise 60% of the final course grade. There are 4 mandatory projects throughout the semester. The maximum grade for each project is 2.5%. The deadline for each project is included in the course outline. If a project is late by a week the maximum grade is 2%; if the project is late by 2 weeks then the maximum grade is 1.5%. Projects are not accepted when they are more than 2 weeks late. Therefore the total project grade is 10% of the final grade. Attendance and homework are mandatory. Absences will affect your final grade and performance in exams. Please make every effort to attend all classes. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to study the material covered. Homework assignments are due in the next class. There is a mandatory lab component of the class. Students have to attend the lab weekly (minimum of 12 times). Students can do their homework, work on lab sheets or work on software related to the studied material during their lab time. Students will receive their lab sheets from their instructor. Lab sheets will be collected at the end of the semester. Homework, attendance, lab attendance and lab participation will comprise 5% of the final grade. The final examination will be given during the 15th week of class. The exam will cover all materials presented in the course. The final exam will comprise 25% of the final grade.
