Introduction to the prewriting and writing process for short essays. May be repeated for a maximum of six (6) credits. Prerequisites: Appropriate ESL course placement score, or a grade of C or better in ESL032, or permission of instructor. MCCCD Official Course Competencies: 1. Write and present orally sentences and questions using words of supposition; adjective clauses; and noun clauses, including reported speech. 2. Identify modes of development in paragraphs. 3. Write and present orally paragraphs of process analysis, cause/effect, and argumentation. 4. Organize, develop and outline a short essay of description, narration, or examples. 5. Write, revise, edit, and present orally a short essay of description, narration, or examples using grammatically correct English. Individual help from the instructor - drop-in help during office hours or by appointment outside of office hours Attendance Policy: Students are expected to be present and on time at each class session for which they are registered. Maricopa Community College District policy indicates that each instructor has the option of dropping a student when s/he has accumulated more unexcused absences than the number of class meetings per week. Students have the right to observe major religious holidays. If a student misses more than two classes, s/he must call the instructor and discuss his/her class status. Students who miss more than two classes may be automatically dropped. Withdraw: Students who want to withdraw must inform the Registration Office in writing. Failure to file an official withdrawal may result in a Z (no credit) grade. 3 Grading and Evaluation Policy: This course is graded on a credit/no credit grading system. This course carries grades of P (credit, equivalent to a passing grade of C or better), or Z (no credit), and is not computed into the student's grade point average. If you would like a letter grade (A, B, C, or D), please notify the instructor immediately. The final grade is based on averaged grades from assignments, tests, and the final examination. Each student may achieve an average of 100%, or 1000 points. The following scale will be used: 90-100% / 900 - 1000 points 80-89% / 800 - 899 points 70-79% / 700 - 799 points 69% & below/ under 700 points A (P) B (P) C (P) D (Z) Grades will be calculated using the following percentages: Class Participation Graded Compositions Assignments (oral & written) Tests Final Examination 9% / 90 pts. 30 class meetings @ 3 pts./class 24% / 240 pts. 6 assignments @ 40 pts./assignment 17%/170 pts. 30% / 300 points 3 tests @ 100 pts. each 20% / 200 points A grade point average of C or better will earn the course grade of P (credit). An average grade of D or lower will earn the course grade of Z (no credit). Homework: Assignments will be explained in class. Due dates will be announced in class. Students must complete assignments by the due dates in order to fully participate in class activities. Late work (except in emergencies) will not be accepted. Tests: If a student must miss a test, s/he can arrange to take the test in the Learning Enhancement and Writing Support Center. These arrangements must be made with the instructor before the test is given in the classroom. Final Examination: The final examination has a value of 20% in calculating the student's final grade and must be taken The final examination will be on Thursday, May 14, 12:00 – 1:50 PM.
