DUFFERIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Volume 2012/13 June 17, 2013 Issue 17 Dear Parents: REPORT CARDS Each year we receive requests for report cards to be issued to students before the last day of school. This is very difficult due to the number of items connected to their preparation. Report cards will be issued to students on the last day (June 27th). If your child is unable to attend that day, arrangements can be made for you to receive the report card. The school office is open until July 5th and report cards may be picked up until that date. If you wish to leave a stamped self addressed envelope, we can mail the report card to you. YEAR END AWARDS CEREMONIES Please note that we will be having two awards assemblies in the last week of school. On Wednesday June 26 at 9:45am we will have an assembly to celebrate third term activities such as Heritage Fair, Young Authors, Young Artists, Track & Field. We will also include some year long events such as service awards, choir and Me to We. YEAR END “ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE” Last year we changed the criteria for our “academic excellence” recognition. Previously, students were required to have a “B” average in five academic areas (Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies). However, the School Planning Council, PAC and the staff felt that since it is academic excellence we wanted to recognize, we needed to “raise the bar” so to speak. The criteria now reads that to be recognized for academic excellence, students are required to have greater than a B average on the year end report card. There are to be no letter grades less than a B in the five academic subjects or grades less than a “C” in the other subject areas. YEAR END REMINDERS Library books All materials borrowed from the library must be returned by June 17. Charges will be assessed for any material that is not returned. Report cards will be held for students with outstanding library charges On Thursday, June 27 at 10:15am (sharp !) we will present our intermediate academic awards, recognize departing staff and the PAC. We will also recognize our departing grade 7s and present a short montage of school events and activities this year. School Textbooks If your child has any classroom text books at home, we would like to get them back before the end of the school year. Each year we inventory our text books and must order extras for ones which have gone missing. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL – THURSDAY, JUNE 27th School Uniforms We are still missing a number of school jerseys given to students for use at the zone and district track meets or basketball season. If your son/daughter has a school jersey at home, could you please have them return it as soon as possible. SCHOOL RE-OPENS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd Lost & Found All found items will be given away to a local charity on the last day of school. Teachers will be encouraged to have students browse through the “found” table but when you drop by the school please check for any items belonging to your child. “Nobody “ is one of the best dressed students in our school ! PRINCIPALS’ YEAR END REMARKS As many of you already know, I will be retiring at the end of June after 39 years with this school district. Mr. Mike Bowden (from Raft River Elem. in Clearwater) will take over next year. Mr. Bowden is a great principal and I leave knowing that Dufferin Elementary will be in exceedingly capable hands. Mr. Bowden brings to Dufferin a new set of skills and will lead Dufferin forward. I have enjoyed three wonderful years at Dufferin. I have appreciated working with a very talented and professional staff. You are very fortunate to have such a great staff working with your children. I cannot say enough about the Dufferin PAC and parents. It has been a pleasure working with keen, caring parents. I have appreciated their support in so many ways. The students at Dufferin are very special and it has been a pleasure teaching and working with them these past three years.. They excel in academics, athletics and in their global responsibility. Watching your children grow and mature is one of the perks of being a school principal. Thank you for that opportunity. ! Best wishes to all for the future !
