The Jefferson Service Training in Advocacy for Residents and Students Program
(JeffSTARS) is an advocacy educational program integrated into our residency training, in
collaboration with Jefferson Medical College and the Department of Family and Community
Medicine of Thomas Jefferson University. Components of JeffSTARS include Advocacy
Cafes, community site visits, and an Advocacy Journal Club during required, outpatient
clinical rotations at Jefferson Pediatrics and the Wilmington Clinic and an Advocacy and
Community Partnership Elective. The Advocacy Elective is open to 4th year medical students
and PL-2 and PL-3 Pediatric and Family and Community Medicine residents. Like the
trainees in the required outpatient rotation, the elective trainees participate in Advocacy
Cafes and the monthly journal clubs, but they additionally attend 15 seminars in advocacy to
cover core topics and teach them practical advocacy skills and they partner with a
1
community organization to work on a mutually agreeable advocacy project. JeffSTARS was
launched thanks to a CPTI/CATCH grant and an educational initiative grant from Columbia
University’s Institute on Medicine as a Profession.
