KLARA Risk assessment When working with laboratory chemicals Ulrika Olsson Why do risk assessments? KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 2 Why do risk assessments? SWEA develop regulations to follow - this to prevent us from damage and / or feel uncomfortable at work. KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 3 Why do risk assessments? KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 4 Why do risk assessments? AFS 2011:19 Important! KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 5 When should I do a risk assessment? According to AFS 2011:19 • An investigation and risk assessment should be done if there is a risk that chemical hazards can cause illness or injury. • A chemical hazard is a substance, or a mix of chemicals, which can lead to illness or accidents by: - their hazardous properties, - its temperature, - by reducing the concentration of oxygen in the air or - increasing risk of fire, explosion or other dangerous reactions. • The chemical hazards should be considered together with the risks of exposure. The assessment shall lead to decisions on what actions to take in order to limit the risks. KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 6 What should the risk assessment include? • • • • • • • • • • Description of the method. Premises Substances/products Risky situations Exposure Personal protection Preventions Total risk Actions in case of accident or spill Name and signature KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 7 When should I make a NEW risk assessment? Suggestions? KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 8 When should I make a NEW risk assessment? For example: • • • • • • New method Changes in the method New premises New staff New classification Other newly discovered risks KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 9 What is a “hazardous” chemical product? A product that, through its toxicological and / or physicochemical properties may lead to injury, illness or accident. Toxic Harmful Corrosive Allergy inducing Irritative CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproduction toxicity) Flammable Explosive Oxidizing Hazardous to environment KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 Definition: En produkt som klassificeras som farlig enligt KIFS 2005:7 eller CLP. A dangerous chemicals do not have to pose a risk: inherent danger is constant, toxic effect depends on the dose. Proper handling and protection limit exposure and therefor the risk of injury. KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 12 How do you know if the product is dangerous? KIFS 2005:7 (Old classification) Classification according to KIFS will run parallel to CLP until 2015. KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 13 How do you know if the product is dangerous? CLP (new classification) Classification according to KIFS will run parallel to CLP until 2015. Labeling of the product gives some information but to really learn about chemical hazards and how to protect yourself, you must read the safety data sheet (MSDS)! • • • According to the law, all hazardous chemicals must be supplied with a MSDS. A MSDS always consist of 16 sections. Provides information about including substances, how to personal protection, first aid, handling of waste etc KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 17 Where can I find information about the product? First aid measures What do I do if a fire starts where the chemical is or if I spill out the chemical? 5. Fire-fighting measures (eg. extinguishing media) 6. Accidental release measures How do I handle the product when it has turned into waste? 13. Disposal considerations (of the chemical and the packaging) KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 18 1. Who should make the risk assessment? 2. Who is responsible for the risk assessment to be made? Suggestions? KLARA Risk assessment April 2013 19 Answer 1. The one that is working with the method/experiment 2. The boss!
