Respiration of Germinating Seeds Lab Challenge When plant seeds carry out "cellular respiration" they produce carbon dioxide. • Does temperature affect the rate at which seeds produce carbon dioxide (CO2)? • Do dormant seeds or geminating seeds produce more CO2? Respiration of Germinating Seeds Background • All living organisms need energy to survive, grow, and reproduce. • Organisms get their energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), a small molecule packed with energy. • Organisms convert sugars and other macromolecules into ATP molecules through a process called cellular respiration. Respiration of Germinating Seeds Self-Check 1. What is the main function of ATP in living organisms? a) respiration b) triphosphate c) motion d) energy This image is a reminder to tap to take a snapshot of the page after you have entered your response. Respiration of Germinating Seeds ...Background • The chemical reaction for cellular respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6O2 ----> 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP molecules) • CO2 is a measurable end product of the reaction. The amount of CO2 created indicates the rate of cellular respiration occurring inside an organism. • The process of cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of all eukaryotic cells. Respiration of Germinating Seeds Self-Check 2. Why does this lab involve measuring the amount CO2 produced by seeds? a) indicates rate of velocity b) indicates rate of mortgage interest c) indicates rate of cellular respiration d) indicates heart-rate Respiration of Germinating Seeds Pre Lab Set Up (Your teacher may have already completed these steps for you) • 24 hours prior to the lab: • Place 20 dry seeds in a beaker and fill the beaker with tap water. • Put the beaker in a dark location for 24 hours. The seeds will begin to germinate. • 30 minutes prior to the lab: • Place half of the germinating seeds into an ice water bath. • Allow them to cool before starting the experiment. Respiration of Germinating Seeds Safety • Use all standard laboratory safety procedures. • DO NOT allow the Carbon Dioxide Gas Sensor to get wet.
