The telecoil, a
small copper
wire is located
inside the
hearing aid.
A telecoil can

understand
dialogue.
b
TELECOILS…
Why are manual telecoils so important?
• Allows accessibility to work phones,
FM/loop systems (for work- meetings,
teachers with hearing loss and many other
settings).
• Without manual tcoils, aids are limited to only the
current programs on the hearing aids (limiting use
of other assistive technology later on)
FM Systems
• Dual microphone
• More control of
feature selections
• Omni and directional
microphones

Technology Worth Talking About
Stethoscope OptionsStethoscope Use with BTE Hearing Aids
Some behind the ear hearing aid models have direct audio input or silhouette capabilities that allow for direct
interface with stethoscopes that have output jacks such as the Cardionics E-Scope II. Users of DAI cords
and silhouettes should work closely with an audiologist, as the quality of the sound output from the hearing
aid may be inadequate to properly diagnose heart/lung sounds. Headphones can also be placed over BTE
hearing aids.

Technology Worth Talking About
Stethoscope OptionsStethoscope Use with CIC/ITE Hearing Aids
Stethoscopes can be used with completely in the canal (CIC) and in the ear (ITE) hearing aids by
interfacing through headphones. Custom made special ear molds are also an option. Stethomate ear tips
can also be used, they replace the hard plastic ear tips found on most stethoscopes.

OC - Open Captioned - The movie's text is superimposed over the screen images.
RW - Rear Window® Captioned - A transparent acrylic panel attached to your seat reflects the captions so
that they appear superimposed on the screen.
USL - USL Closed Captioned System (CCS)® - The CCS is designed to enhance the hearing impaired cinema
patron\'s movie-going experience. A single infrared emitter broadcasts closed caption text and two

positioned in front of you or special eyewear.
CV - CaptiView® Closed Captioning - The CaptiView system consists of a small OLED display on a bendable
support arm that fits into the theater seat cup holder. The easy-to-read screen is equipped with a high

SONY ENTERTAINMENT ACCESS GLASSES
Outfitted with small projectors on each
side, these glasses display green text
captions, directly onto the glasses.
Users are able to change the brightness
of the captions, the size, and the angle at
which they appear, in order to get the
best view possible.
An audio jack is also attached that can
transmit assistive audio, or an auditory
description of the screen, for the visually
impaired.
The glasses also support 3D capability, to
eliminate the need for a second pair of
glasses for 3D feature films.
CART: Communication Access Real-time Translation
•Communication service for persons with hearing loss provided by
a specially trained realtime court reporter.
•Persons who are late-deafened, hard of hearing or deaf
and have not learned sign language
•CART reporters write the spoken word.
• CART is used in classrooms, medical settings, churches,
the work place and for meetings.
•The Americans with Disability Act includes CART in its definition as an
“auxiliary aid”. This means one has the same rights to CART as they
would to a sign language interpreter or Assistive Listening device.
