
AAP – Role in MOC is merely to support
physicians completing requirements.

ABP – Independent Certifying Board
that sets Board Certification (MOC)
requirements.
What is MOC?

Maintenance of Certification
 A fancy abbreviation that encompasses the
four steps to maintaining board certification.
 Each step is independent of the others.
Part 1

Professional Standing
 Maintain a valid, unrestricted medical license
in at least one state in the U.S., its territories
or Canada.
 CME credits are specific to maintaining state
license.
Part 2

Self Assessment
 Educational and self-assessment programs
that meet specialty-specific standards.
 Independent of CME credits, though Part 2
activities may provide CME credit.
 At least 40 points required every 5 years.
 Approved programs are listed on the ABP
website. Some are restricted to affiliates of
sponsoring organization.

Improvement (QI) project.
 At least 40 points required every 5 years.
 Three options

○ Complete an online module (ABP website)
○ Complete an approved project (ABP website)
Part 4: Submit a QI Project for
Approval

ABP approves projects that meet the
ABP Standards
 Complete application describing project
 $500 application fee

Some hospitals are portfolio sponsors
and can approve their own projects.
 Talk to hospital QI leadership or call ABP to
find out if your hospital is a portfolio sponsor.
 AAP Section of Perinatology is exploring
portfolio sponsorship.
Part 4: Complete an Online
Module
Link to these directly from the ABP
website.
 No charge for modules developed by the
ABP though very few exist.


sponsoring organization to participate in
most cases.
