Early Recovery and Rehabilitation Support for the Households Affected by Flood and Water logging in Bangladesh 1 Project Background Heavy rainfall in August 2011 combined with poor maintenance of drainage system and river protection embankment, siltation of major rivers and intrusion of water from West Bengal, India caused flooding in 13 districts in Bangladesh. Satkhira district is categorised as badly affected by flood in respect to affected households (HHs) numbers, damage and loss of houses, crops, sanitation and communication. As per the Joint Need Assessment report, in the assessed areas (41 unions of Jessore and Sathkhira district), a total of 72,284 families were affected in the sectors of food security, livelihood, water & sanitation, shelter and education. Each family will have to come twice a month and after each training they will receive BDT 700.
