Chest x-ray abnormal - Latent (Dormant) TB Infection (LTBI) No symptoms 10% chance of developing into Active TB (cont) Many Students from outside the U.S.A. have been exposed to TB. Most of these students are not sick. Many have Latent TB Infection (LTBI) and are at risk for developing active TB at some time in the future. Treatment of LTBI can prevent the onset of active TB. Testing for TB TB Skin Test (TST) Can be inaccurate QuanteFERON Blood Test Very accurate This is the preferred test at UAlbany UAlbany Policy All students from TB endemic countries without a QuanteFERON Serum test done within 6 months of arrival in the U.S. must have testing done here in Albany. Positive TB QuanteFERON Test Two possibilities A) Active TB Sick Abnormal Chest X-ray B) Latent TB Infection (LTBI) Not sick Normal Chest X-ray What Will Happen Today Blood sample will be taken today or at another scheduled time. You will be notified of positive results (indicating TB infection) by e-mail. – Those found to be positive will meet with a Medical provider at the health center for a chest x-ray and discussion of treatment options. Those with negative test results require no further action. After 5 years the BCG has no effect on PPD. A PPD over 14 mm is NEVER due to a BCG In general BCG does not change how we interpret a PPD (TB Skin test). Who needs a TB Test? Students from areas with a high prevalence of TB All countries in these regions: * Africa *Eastern Mediterranean *Southeast Asian *Some European Countries Students with known Positive PPD: Must complete a TB symptom questionnaire Must provide a copy of a chest x-ray report done within the 6 months prior to arrival on campus from a US facility. Students without this chest x-ray will have one ordered for them here. It is covered by their International Health Insurance.
