2011 National Health Expenditure Accounts: Highlights
 National health spending increased 3.9 percent in 2011, the
same rate of growth as in 2009 and 2010
 National health spending reached $2.7 trillion, or $8,680 per
person in 2011
 The share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) devoted to health
care spending remained steady from 2009 through 2011 at 17.9
percent

2011 National Health Expenditure Accounts: Highlights
 Personal health care (PHC) spending increased 4.1 percent in
2011—a slight acceleration from growth of 3.7 percent in 2010
 Growth in non-price factors such as the use & intensity of health
care goods and services increased in 2011
 Spending for retail prescription drugs, physician and clinic’s
services grew at a quicker pace in 2011
 Medicare, private health insurance, and consumer out-ofpocket spending growth picked up in 2011
