What is a Locum?
• A locum refers to a physician who assumes another physician’s
clinical duties on a temporary basis
• Locums are a valuable component of the physician workforce
because they enable physicians to take time off for vacation, illness,
parental leave or professional development
• Placements may occur informally between physicians or formally
through programs OPLP
• Locums are sought across the province, by various health care
providers and organizations, and in various specialties
• Locums are an important component of retention programs
Ontario Physician Locum Programs (OPLP)
