Presenter
Michael D. Finney is a 25-year veteran of the fire service, having served at all
ranks from Firefighter to Chief. He currently serves as the CEO for the
Open Fire Academy (www.openfireacademy.org) Mr. Finney serves as
faculty for American Military University, Grand Canyon University,
Fairleigh-Dickinson University, and Ivy Bridge College. He previously served
as the Director of Public Safety Services for Great Oaks Institute of
Technology and Career Development and the Fire Chief for the Village of
Glendale, Ohio. Michael is also an adjunct instructor with the National Fire
Academy for the "Fire Service Course Design" program. He has
authored/edited several books and magazines in leadership and training
for the fire service.

In this program we look at initial scene size up as
it relates to emergency response. We will
define initial scene size up and determine
when it should occur. In addition, we will
explain the components of a good size up and
explain the notification and communication
process.

Three Simple Basic Questions
• What do I have going on?
• How and where is it going?
• What do I need to control it?

What’s in the initial transmission?
• IDENTIFY your unit arriving on scene
• DEFINE what you have (i.e., structure type,
situation, etc.)

better identify)
