La Leyenda de la Flor de Nochebuena
The legend of the poinsettia is a traditional story that
comes from Mexico. There are several versions of the
story. Which ever version you read, it is always about
a poor child, boy or girl, who does not have a gift to
give to Baby Jesus during the Christmas procession.
The child is very sad. As the town’s people are
marching down to church for the procession either an
angel or a younger sibling tells the child that no
matter how small a gift is, the Baby Jesus will love it.
So the child picks some weeds and places them on
the manger as her gift for Christmas. Once the
weeds are offered to the Baby Jesus, a miracle
happens. The weeds turn bright red and the manger
is surrounded by beautiful star-like flowers. Because
the child offered the weeds with love they are turned
into the beautiful poinsettias.
After learning the necessary vocabulary assign roles
to students and have them act it our as you tell the
story. Retail the story several times. Ensure you
change the story each time you tell it. Finally read
the actual story together as a class. then have
students read the story to each other. Once they are
finished they should fill our the Cloze activity and
answer the questions provided. There are also game
activities, coloring page, and crafts they can do to
reenforce the Christmas theme.
Before reading this version of La Leyenda de la Flor
de Nochebuane, familiarize the children with key
verbs and nouns by using Total Physical Response
(TPR) technique.
