Grown at high elevations on Mount Etna in Sicily, the aromatic range of the varietal is so well perfumed with red flowers and red berries, it has immediate charm for lovers of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. Like Luca Roagna is one of the most dynamic young winemakers in all of Italy. As a fifth generation Vignaiolo he acts as a guardian of traditional Piemontese winemaking technique and philosophy. All those involved in the creation of these wines are imprinted with the family motto “Roagna Does Not Change”. However, Signore Roagna’s wines are magnificent at doing just that, those two varietals, Nerello showcases a wide range of flavors dependent on terroir , giving the changing, evolving in the bottle, in the glass and on one’s palate. A wine may begin its life resulting wine great transparency too. The styles range from ethereal and light, to earthy and austere and mysterious but after a few years in the cellar or a mere thirty minutes in a decanter tannic, or what the Sicilians call Selvatico which translates to ‘wild and untamed.’ We have one’s senses are bombarded with classic flavors of menthol, dried flower, limestone and smoky collected a few of our favorites here: tar. Many of his wines spend up to two months on the skins before being transferred to large Slavonian oak casks and aged for up to 8 years. The final step in the conception of these wines is bottling without fining or filtering, risking instability to protect every gram of terroir in each FARO Palari 2007 bottle. Year after year Roagna produces wines of purity with remarkable and recognizable sense 165 of place. We are proud to offer an array of his powerful yet elegant Nebbioli in the hope of Faro is the tiny DOC that put the grape on the map in the first place, with an earthy volcanic style exhibited clearly in this brooding version. PASSOPISCIARO Franchetti ‘Contrada Chiappemacine C’ 2011 getting you just as addicted to them as we are. 135 Layers of fruit are vibrantly balanced by a vein of minerality in this bottling that Franchetti sources from lower elevations, a mere 550 meters above sea level. ETNA ROSSO Terre Nere ‘Calderara Sottana’ 2012 84 ETNA ROSSO Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ 2011 95 This is always the vanguard vineyard in Marco de Grazia’s lineup, frequently developing the soft drinkability and floral intrigue before the other higher elevation vineyards come around. A steeply terraced vineyard featuring Volcanic ash and sand create a dramatically lacey perfume in this bottling from Marco de Grazia. ETNA ROSSO Benanti ‘Rovittello’ 1998 220 ETNA ROSSO Benanti ‘Serra della Contessa’ 2000 245 We can harken back to when Salvo Foti has his guiding hand turning these underappreciated Benanti vineyards into glorious complex wines. The depth of the bouquet remains striking in this, the most textured wine we have encountered from Etna. While Rovittello shows the textures of Volcanic soil, Serra della Contessa typically marries savory meaty flavors with great red fruit expression as well. The bottle age helps to highlight those qualities, boasting red berries and stewed lamb essence in this bottling. MAGNUM 350 The crown jewel of Marco de Grazia’s estate, the grapes for this cuvee come from vines that date back to 1870. The resulting wine showcases the most mineral structure of our cellar selections. ETNA ROSSO Terre Nere ‘Prephilloxera’ 2010 24 BARBARESCO ‘MONTEFICO~VECCHIE VIGNE’ 2007 275 This marks the very first vintage whereby Luca began to recognize the wealth of old vines in some of their ancient crus. Montefico is the Roagna family’s tiniest parcel, but providing plenty of 50+ year old Nebbiolo vines for this intensely structured style. BARBARESCO ‘PAJE’ 2003 285 2000 325 Two dynamically opposed vintages, one a monument towards ageability, the other a warm and forward year. Despite the generous fruit that the 2003 vintage suggests, there is still a remarkable degree of balance in this particular wine, the best of Luca’s 2003 showings. Meanwhile, power and vibrancy combine to make the 2000 a monolith of Barbaresco. BARBARESCO RISERVA BLACK LABEL ‘PAJE’ 1998 625 This is the CURRENT Release of this very special bottling with a great advantage of drinkability and perfect provenance. The wine is showing fresh vibrancy married to complex notes of orange peel and tobacco. BAROLO ‘VIGNA RIONDA’ 2006 235 Luca’s Baroli tend to show a voluptuousness that we don’t encounter in his young Barbaresco bottlings. That’s certainly the case here, a velvet robe encases the housestyle earth and mineral with plenty of Rose petal perfumes wafting clear of the glass. LIBRERIA DEL VINO LIBRERIA DEL VINO VINEYARD FOCUS: TUSCANY’S PODERE FORTE VINTAGE HIGHLIGHT: 1998 IN PIEMONTE Something exciting has been developing on the sweeping hillside of Orcia . This Tuscan Welcome to our celebration of one of the great insider vintages: 1998. This was a bottling landmark on the corner of the Montalcino wine region is the ideal home for the new Farm and that required great patience in the fashion that reminds us of classic years from decades ago. Winery known as Podere Forte. This resurrection of a famous old vineyard from history has When the 1998 Barolos and Barbarescos were released, the wines remained formidably reclaimed its role as a Tuscan Nirvana, with a spare no expense attitude. Since their opening, structured, with a tannic attack that confounded reviewers and critics. Would the tannins ever the Farm quickly became known for producing the best pasta in Tuscany from their organic assimilate into the wine? A few years ago, we began to receive an excellent answer. The tannins grains, and for their Prosciutto sourced from their free-range Hogs. But the true potential for a have evolved into earthy flavors and textures, with purple flowers decorating the highlights and return to fame lay within their vineyards. the fruit essence shining through. Suddenly we discovered winemakers selling their 1997 and 2000’s while drinking their 1998’s. Let’s join them… PETRUCCI PODERE FORTE Sangiovese 2010 180 2006 205 2002 250 BAROLO BORGOGNO CLASSICO RISERVA 1998 This particular bottling represents a current sea change in the ancient house of Borgogno (1761 opening date) In 1998 the winemaking advances allowed more fruit and roses to buttress the considerable licorice earthiness inherent to the conservative house approach. Widely considered an essential wine of the vintage. Petrucci is the historic name for the estate before the arrival of Pasquale Forte. By Extension, this particular bottling celebrates the historic Sangiovese grape as well. Always 100% pure, the intention here is to capture the Tuscan flavor. Highlights of violets give way to cherries, cedar and porcini mushrooms on the palate. BAROLO R. SEGHESIO GRAN RISERVA ‘Pajana’ 1998 BAROLO G. RINALDI ‘Brunate ~ Le Coste’ 1998 220 2009 185 2008 190 275 This wine was only just released two years ago, a bottling that Renzo makes only in tiny quantities in the best years. As the mayor of Monforte for 20 years, his command of the traditional style shines through here with focused aromas of iron, tar and dried purple flowers. GUARDIAVIGNA PODERE FORTE Cabernet-Merlot-Petit Verdot 2010 250 525 Beppe Rinaldi remains one of the rare stalwarts of the blending art, combining these two renowned vineyards from the commune of Barolo. The result showcases the broadest aromatic range of these selections with licorice and black truffle leading the vanguard of scents. BAROLO PRUNOTTO ‘Bussia’ 1998 From the highest hilltop on the estate, you can spy the squat formidable tower that surveys the landscape below, watching for the troops of Siena as they sweep north towards Florence. This is the Guardiavigna! As a nod to the mercantile importance of the estate, this wine focuses on the international varietals that express themselves so well on these Tuscan hills. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the Black Currant and rosemary, Merlot adds textural depth and velvet while Petit Verdot supplies the graphite mineral backdrop. 26 575 This winery was taken over by the illustrious Antinori family in 1989, immediately lending the single crus a longer focus and vision than prior Prunotto bottlings. After holding this wine back in their cellars, we jumped at a chance to share these 1998’s directly from their holdings. Darker fruit and velvet inform this caressing Bussia. BARBARESCO RISERVA BLACK LABEL ROAGNA ‘Paje’ 1998 625 This is the CURRENT Release of this very special bottling with a great advantage of drinkability and perfect provenance.
