As a fifth generation fascination with an ancient grape from Sicily called Nerello Mascalese . Grown at high Vignaiolo he acts as a guardian of traditional Piemontese winemaking technique and philosophy. elevations on Mount Etna in Sicily, the aromatic range of the varietal is so well perfumed with All those involved in the creation of these wines are imprinted with the family motto “Roagna red flowers and red berries, it has immediate charm for lovers of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. Like Does Not Change”. However, Signore Roagna’s wines are magnificent at doing just that, those two varietals, Nerello showcases a wide range of flavors dependent on terroir , giving the changing, evolving in the bottle, in the glass and on one’s palate. A wine may begin its life resulting wine great transparency too. The styles range from ethereal and light, to earthy and austere and mysterious but after a few years in the cellar or a mere thirty minutes in a decanter tannic, or what the Sicilians call Selvatico which translates to ‘wild and untamed.’ We have one’s senses are bombarded with classic flavors of menthol, dried flower, limestone and smoky collected a few of our favorites here: tar. Many of his wines spend up to two months on the skins before being transferred to large Slavonian oak casks and aged for up to 8 years. The final step in the conception of these wines is bottling without fining or filtering, risking instability to protect every gram of terroir in each FARO Palari 2007 bottle. Year after year Roagna produces wines of purity with remarkable and recognizable sense 165 of place. We are proud to offer an array of his powerful yet elegant Nebbioli in the hope of Faro is the tiny DOC that put the grape on the map in the first place, with an earthy volcanic style exhibited clearly in this brooding version. PASSOPISCIARO Franchetti ‘Contrada Porcaria P’ 2011 getting you just as addicted to them as we are. 180 Layers of fruit are vibrantly balanced by a vein of minerality in this bottling that Franchetti sources from the ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ vineyard. ETNA ROSSO Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ 2011 90 A steeply terraced vineyard featuring Volcanic ash and sand create a dramatically lacey perfume in this bottling from Marco de Grazia. ETNA ROSSO Girolamo Russo ‘Feudo’ 2008 220 We can harken back to when Salvo Foti has his guiding hand turning these underappreciated Benanti vineyards into glorious complex wines. The depth of the bouquet remains striking in this, the most textured wine we have encountered from Etna. ETNA ROSSO Benanti ‘Serra della Contessa’ 2000 2004 225 Asili is among the most important Vineyards in the Barbaresco zone, earlier made famous by Bruno Giacosa. There is much to love about Roagna’s equally compelling bottling. This vintage offers us taut minerality with heady aromas. BARBARESCO ‘MONTEFICO~VECCHIE VIGNE’ 125 Just a little bit of bottle age goes a long way for this wine, developing a lilting savory range with veal jus and silky flower petal textures ETNA ROSSO Benanti ‘Rovittello’ 1998 BARBARESCO ‘ASILI’ 245 While Rovittello shows the textures of Volcanic soil, Serra della Contessa typically marries savory meaty flavors with great red fruit expression as well. The bottle age helps to highlight those qualities, boasting red berries and stewed lamb essence in this bottling. MAGNUM 350 The crown jewel of Marco de Grazia’s estate, the grapes for this cuvee come from vines that date back to 1870. The resulting wine showcases the most mineral structure of our cellar selections. ETNA ROSSO Terre Nere ‘Prephilloxera’ 2010 2007 275 This marks the very first vintage whereby Luca began to recognize the wealth of old vines in some of their ancient crus. Montefico is the Roagna family’s tiniest parcel, but providing plenty of 50+ year old Nebbiolo vines for this intensely structured style. BARBARESCO ‘PAJE’ 2003 285 Despite the generous fruit that this vintage suggests, there is still a remarkable degree of balance in this particular wine, the best of Luca’s 2003 showings. A sublimely caressing Barbaresco. BARBARESCO RISERVA BLACK LABEL ‘PAJE’ 1998 625 This is the CURRENT Release of this very special bottling with a great advantage of drinkability and perfect provenance. The wine is showing fresh vibrancy married to complex notes of orange peel and tobacco. BAROLO ‘VIGNA RIONDA’ 2006 225 Luca’s Baroli tend to show a voluptuousness that we don’t encounter in his young Barbaresco bottlings. That’s certainly the case here, a velvet robe encases the housestyle earth and mineral with plenty of Rose petal perfumes wafting clear of the glass. 24 LIBRERIA DEL VINO LIBRERIA DEL VINO VINEYARD FOCUS: BAROLO’S BRUNATE TERROIR VINTAGE HIGHLIGHT: 1998 IN PIEMONTE The wines of Brunate, a vineyard shared by the communes of La Morra and Barolo , are among Welcome to our celebration of one of the great insider vintages: 1998. This was a bottling that the most spectacular in Italy and fit perfectly into a handsome yet pretty frame. ‘Tov’ a complex required great patience in the fashion that reminds us of classic years from decades ago. When local mixture of sand, clay and limestone yields a chiseled yet seductive velvety structure, the 1998 Barolos and Barbarescos were released, the wines remained formidably structured, with powerful ripe red berry with delicate rose petal, and sturdy ageable wines often endowed with a tannic attack that confounded reviewers and critics. Would the tannins ever assimilate into pleasure even when young. We are lucky to list here a few classics and few delicious lesser the wine? A few years ago, we began to receive an excellent answer. The tannins have evolved known favorites. into earthy flavors and textures, with purple flowers decorating the highlights and the fruit essence shining through. Suddenly we discovered winemakers selling their 1997 and 2000’s while CERETTO BRICCO ROCCHE ‘Brunate’ drinking their 1998’s. Let’s join them… 2008 180 2006 195 Ceretto, a historic name in both Barolo and Barbaresco started enhancing their wines with modern flare after 1990. Limestone dusted raspberry, rose and cold smoke captivate in the 2008 while the 2006 offers more bracing minerality with classic Barolo tannic structure. BAROLO R. SEGHESIO GRAN RISERVA ‘Pajana’ 1998 This wine was only just released two years ago, a bottling that Renzo makes only in tiny quantities in the best years. As the mayor of Monforte for 20 years, his command of the traditional style shines through here with focused aromas of iron, tar and dried purple flowers. VIETTI ‘Brunate’ BAROLO G. RINALDI ‘Brunate ~ Le Coste’ 1998 2008 285 2007 325 2006 305 BAROLO PRUNOTTO ‘Bussia’ 1998 465 BARBARESCO RISERVA BLACK LABEL ROAGNA ‘Paje’ 1998 595 This is the CURRENT Release of this very special bottling with a great advantage of drinkability and perfect provenance. The wine is showing fresh vibrancy married to complex notes of orange peel and tobacco. 550 An impressive conjuring of ethereal dark fruit with eucalyptus and spice, Roberto Voerzio took a dangerously hot vintage and turned it into a modern classic. 26 575 This winery was taken over by the illustrious Antinori family in 1989, immediately lending the single crus a longer focus and vision than prior Prunotto bottlings. After holding this wine back in their cellars, we jumped at a chance to share these 1998’s directly from their holdings. Darker fruit and velvet inform this caressing Bussia. This vintage has become famous for how 1998 rewarded the patient purists. Now wines like this bottling are showing wondrous richness married to the earthy textures and flavors. ROBERTO VOERZIO ‘Brunate’ 2003 495 Beppe Rinaldi remains one of the rare stalwarts of the blending art, combining these two renowned vineyards from the commune of Barolo. The result showcases the broadest aromatic range of these selections with licorice and black truffle leading the vanguard of scents. Luca Currado, Vietti’s winemaker, has a winemaking style all his own.
