The Gospel According to Paul
Romans 13:1-2
Let every person be
subject to the governing
authorities. For there is
no authority except
from God, and those
that exist have been
instituted by God.
2 Therefore whoever
resists the authorities
resists what God has
appointed, and those
who resist will incur
judgment.

Romans 13:3-4
For rulers are not a terror
to good conduct, but to
bad. Would you have no
fear of the one who is in
authority? Then do what is
good, and you will receive
his approval, 4 for he is
God's servant for your
good. But if you do wrong,
be afraid, for he does not
bear the sword in vain. For
he is the servant of God, an
avenger who carries out
God's wrath on the
wrongdoer.
1. Gov’t authorities are
established by God
2. Rulers have a purpose
Be subject for the Lord's
sake to every human
institution, whether it
be to the emperor as
supreme, 14 or to
governors as sent by
him to punish those
who do evil and to
praise those who do
good.
1. Gov’t authorities are
established by God
2. Rulers have a purpose
Romans 13:5
Therefore one must be in
subjection, not only to
avoid God's wrath but
also for the sake of
conscience.
3. Submission is the
Right thing to do
Stops foolish talk,
accusations, and sets a
good example
For this is the will of God,
that by doing good you
should put to silence
the ignorance of
foolish people. 16 Live
as people who are
free, not using your
freedom as a cover-up
for evil, but living as
servants of God.
Doing right with patience
gains God’s approval
For what credit is it if,
when you sin and are
beaten for it, you
endure? But if when
you do good and suffer
for it you endure, this
is a gracious thing in
the sight of God.
Romans 13:6-8
For because of this you also
pay taxes, for the
authorities are ministers of
God, attending to this very
thing. 7 Pay to all what is
owed to them: taxes to
whom taxes are owed,
revenue to whom revenue
is owed, respect to whom
respect is owed, honor to
whom honor is owed.
8 Owe no one anything,
except to love each other,
for the one who loves
another has fulfilled the
law.

head of Christ is God.

Wives should submit
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is
right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”
Hebrews 13:17
Christians should submit
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are
keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to
give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with
groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in
the Lord, for this is right.
For children
1 Peter 3:5-6
For this is how the holy women
who hoped in God used to
adorn themselves, by
submitting to their own
husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed
Abraham, calling him lord.
And you are her children, if
you do good and do not fear
anything that is frightening.
For wives
For elders
1 Peter 5:2-4
shepherd the flock of God
that is among you,
exercising oversight, not
under compulsion, but
willingly, as God would
have you; not for shameful
gain, but eagerly; 3 not
domineering over those in
your charge, but being
examples to the
flock. 4 And when the chief
Shepherd appears, you will
receive the unfading crown
of glory.
For all Christians

paying what we
owe in respect,
and honor, and
support in homes
and in the church
just as we should

that govern us.

Pray for us, for we are sure
that we have a clear
conscience, desiring to act
honorably in all things.

honorable not only in the
Lord's sight but also in the
sight of man.
