ASL 101: LEARNING
ADVANCED SQUAD LEADER
Session 10: Direct Fire Combat, Part 2
with Russ Gifford
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Goals for this Session
This session:
• We will learn how motion and maneuver impacts
the To Hit process.
• We will also start shooting at AFVs to learn
about how the target facing affects the location
of the Hit.
• Finally, we will see how the To Kill process
works.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Goals for this Session
Remember:
Using MA/Guns we need to find the To Hit #, and
roll <= to get a Hit.
• How we resolve a hit depends on what we are
firing (HE or AP) and what we are firing at.
• AP requires us to penetrate armor, or hit a Gun
to ensure a kill. HE is resolved using the IFT, or
the HE to Kill table.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Goals for This Session
This session, we will also learn:
• Motion status
• Using a Bazooka
• HIP
• Emplaced Guns
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Example of MA/Gun Firing
Prep Fire:
AFV fires
at 747 in
Stone
Bldg.
What is
the To Hit
and the
DRMs?
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Direct or Area Fire
To decide the To Hit and the DRMs, we have to
choose if we are firing Direct Fire (meaning
targeting the Inf Unit/AFV/Gun) or Area Fire
(targeting the location).
• Let’s start with Direct Fire
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Direct Fire
First, use chart C3:
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Which number to use?
On C3 there are two numbers, one black, one red –
which do you use?
The Nationalities chart tells you.
• Germans always use the BLACK ‘To Hit’
numbers.
• But note, at the 0-6 range, it is always the same!
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Direct Fire
Now, use chart C4:
ASL 101: Fire Combat
C4 Modifications
On C4, at range 0 - 12, there are no modifications
unless firing SMOKE.
So no modification to the Basic To Hit, right?
Thus, the Modified To Hit is 8, correct?
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Example of Direct Fire
So right
now, we
have a
Modified
To Hit # of
8.
Now
check C5
and C6.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Direct Fire
Chart C5 are Firer-Based DRMs:
This is Prep Fire. We did not change CA (covered
arc), and we are not in motion. But we are buttoned
up! (No CE marker!)
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Example of Direct Fire
Modified
To Hit of
8.
+1 DRM
from C5.
Now
check C6.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Direct Fire
Chart C6 is about the Target
This is Prep Fire, so we are not moving. We are not
concealed. Only TEM applies: +3 Stone Building.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Example of Direct Fire
So:
C3: Basic
To Hit: 8
C4: +0
=Modified
To Hit: 8
DRMs: +4
ASL 101: Fire Combat
To Hit Notes
Modified To Hit = 8 (C3 modified by C4).
DRMs to the To Hit Dice Roll = +4
(+1 BU +3 TEM).
This is not a good shot, is it? 1 in 6 chance to get a hit.
(Note the circled B# of 10 – meaning you almost have an
equal chance of breaking the gun as getting a hit!)
Can we do better?
ASL 101: Fire Combat
To Hit Notes
Normally, we’d use Area
Fire – but the special
notes for this Tank say:
“The MA may not use
Area Fire!” And it will
NOT Acquire targets!
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Example of Direct Fire
So:
So if we
roll a 1,3 =
4, we hit!
Go to the
IFT.
DR= 1,3
Hit!
ASL 101: Fire Combat
To Kill Notes
ASL 101: Fire Combat
To Kill Notes
Find the column with
the HE equivalency
of the Gun size.
In this case, the
Vehicle notes told us
= 36+ column, -3!
Roll!
ASL 101: Fire Combat
To Kill Notes
So if you roll a 4,3 = 7, then -3, that’s a 2 KIA!
• So the squad is KIA, and removed from the
board.
• Next, roll 1 dr: if you roll a 1, the building is
rubbled! (If it were wood, it would rubble on a 1
or 2)
• Now check for flame DR (see notes on IFT)
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Example of Direct Fire
Place
rubble,
flame if
you rolled
low
enough,
and your
Prep Fire
marker!

Quiz
1. The modifier was +4 DRM: +1 Buttoned
Up +3 Stone Bldg. Can the SturmTiger get
around that +1 by going Crew Exposed?
Answer:
No – the vehicle notes say it can’t fire CE.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Quiz
2. What if it were one hex closer to the
building – would that make a difference?
Answer:
Yes – the PBF range is -1 at two hex range,
or -2 at a one hex range!
(See table C6, Case L)
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Quiz
3. If we’d rolled a 1,1 on the To Hit DR, what
would have happened?
Answer:
This would have been a Critical Hit, doubling
the fire, and subtracting the TEM as a
DRM on the result.
ASL 101: Fire Combat
Quiz
4. Could we get a Critical Hit on any other
DR?
Answer:
Yes – a DR = 3 in this case. See the vehicle
notes. “If the original To Hit DR is < ½ the
Modified To Hit die roll, the shot is a
possible CH. Roll a subsequent dr - if 1 or
2, it is a CH.
