Lec: Neutralization of Acids and Bases NaOH + HCl What type of chemical is NaOH? NaOH + HCl (Base) Answer: A Base NaOH + HCl (Base) What type of chemical is HCl? NaOH + HCl (Base) (Acid) Answer: An Acid NaOH + HCl (Base) (Acid) NaCl + H2O What is NaCl? NaOH + HCl (Base) (Acid) NaCl + H2O (Salt) Answer: Salt NaOH + HCl (Base) (Acid) NaCl + H2O (Salt) What is H2O? NaOH + HCl (Base) (Acid) NaCl + H2O (Salt) (Water) Answer: Water When you add an acid to a base you make a salt water solution. Neutralization is the process when an acid is added to a base. Each particle of an acid can neutralize a base particle. To neutralize acids and bases the following equation can be used. • Concentration A x Volume A= Concentration B x Volume B You have 500 ml of an acid with a concentration of 1% and base with a concentration of 2%. How much base will you need to neutralize the acid. 500 ml x 1% = ? x 2% 500 = ? x 2% 500/2 = 250 ml Base ACID: 1% BASE: 2% ACID: 1% BASE: 2% ACID: 1% BASE: 2% If you have 1 drop of base how many base particles do you have? ACID: 1% BASE: 2% 1 Drop 2 base particles If you have 2 base particles you will need the same number of acid particles to neutralize. In this example you will need 2 acid particles to neutralize the 2 base particles. How many drops of the acid are required to neutralize the 1 drop of the base? ACID: 1% BASE: 2% ? drops 1 Drop 2 acid particles 2 base particles In order to neutralize this base drop, you would need 2 drops of the acid.
