AIM. To explain and demonstrate the
nurse’s role in intubation
OBJECTIVES. By the end of this
session you should be able to.
 State the reasons for intubation
 assemble and check the equipment
required.
 Assist safely with intubation

Tracheal intubation;

Is the insertion of a breathing tube into
the trachea through the vocal chords.
This is normally performed under direct
vision with the aid of a laryngoscope.
The tube is usually passer through the
mouth (oro-tracheal intubation)
occasionally it is passed through the
nose (naso-tracheal intubation). Morton
1997 p52.
Reasons for intubation
For head and neck operations or
remoteness from pt. Eg. ct scan
 To prevent gastric content aspiration
eg. low GCS
 When the airway is difficult
eg.maxfax,oedema
 For ill pts or with complicated
anaesthesia techniques.eg.high Fi 02,
reduce Co2 in H.I.
 For resuscitation. (Carrie et al 1996)


 Hand to Dr – in a way to ensure quick,
smooth procedure.


Monitor patient- dr is looking down a
throat not at what is around him!!
