What happens when
the Valves Fail?
Valves in the vein lack the apposition
needed to prevent reverse flow of blood
down your leg
Prolonged dilation damages the valves,
so even when vasoconstriction occurs,
the blood continues to flow in the wrong
direction
The resulting backpressure is termed
“venous hypertension”, and this is what
causes the painful varicosities

Surgical Treatment
Stripping and Ligation
Once the “stripper” is tied in place, the surgeon
rips the stripper and the vein from the leg

Problems with Stripping
and Ligation of the GSV
• The procedure must be done under general anesthesia in a
hospital setting
• Most patients suffer from severe post-operative pain requiring
prescription drugs to cope
• Severe bruising/ tenderness along the treated vein
• Typical recovery is between 2-4 weeks
• There is a high failure/ reoccurrence rate associated with this
procedure
