Neurosurgery
Version 1.1 (30th September 2013) by Chris Jones, Service Manager Major Trauma
The Leeds Teaching Hospitals
NHS Trust
Benefits for referrers
• Easier to refer - not needing to remain on hold
while switchboard are trying to contact the on-call
neurosurgeon (who may be operating)
• Quick responses
• Documented decisions and plans that can be
printed and placed in patient notes
• Time and date-stamped referrals and responses
• Improved Communication - Removing the need
to re-discuss with neurosurgery if initial
conversations aren't recorded in the notes
• Consistency of care (and therefore responses
and plans) within neurosurgical registrars and
consultants, rather than having to start from
scratch the next day with a new neurosurgeon
on-call
• Easier to call - the on-call mobile is kept free for
truly life-threatening emergencies, so that these
can be given the immediate attention that they
require

Benefits for the Neurosurgical
department
• Focus capacity - Ability to triage
referrals effectively and deal with
these sequentially without being
repeatedly disturbed by bleeps that
may or may not require urgent
attention
• Improved Documentation - Written,
documented plans of action can be
provided for patients
• Auditable database of referrals in
order to monitor and improve
standards of care for patients
• Improved Communication - Less
time spent re-discussing plans for
patients will allow for more prompt
responses to queries.
