Feasibility study by Barnard Microsystems & Inmarsat, with Shell Global Solutions Projects & Technology. 2. Beyond line of sight operation where it might be irresponsible to use pilots, such as in areas of civil unrest. 3. Broadband satcoms downlink provides both telemetry and imaging. 4. Successful study has led to Demo project SURMON. ESA Unclassified: for Official Use Small Aircraft Situational Awareness for emergency response (SASISA) 1. Enables first responders to use overhead surveillance during initial, most critical phase of response. 2. Done real-time by combining satellite & terrestrial systems. 3. Complies with established operational methods & financial limitations of civil public sector agencies. 4. Can also be used for routine monitoring of infrastructure. 5. Commercial off-the-shelf sensors fitted to small aircraft: a. Infrared camera, high resolution optical camera. 6. Instant, two-way, broadband voice & data communications between aircraft & emergency centre. 7. Larger demonstration project now being planned. ESA Unclassified: for Official Use Small Aircraft Situational Awareness for emergency response (SASISA) ESA Unclassified: for Official Use ARTES 20 demo : Space-AIS for Blue Belt EMSA Blue Belt pilot project The reception of reliable information on ships’ prior to their arrival at port helps Customs Authorities in their operations (anticipating ship arrivals, risk assessment, prioritisation of controls, etc). The knowledge of ships’ actual routes (especially beyond the coastal region) is critical for the Customs Authorities to be reassured about which ships are operating on intra-EU trading routes, and may lead in the future to a reduction of the administrative burden for these ships. ESA Unclassified: for Official Use European Maritime Safety Agency: www.emsa.europa.eu The aim of the EMSA Blue Belt pilot project is to deliver notification reports with ships information to maritime customs authorities of all EU Member States. ARTES 20 demo: Space-AIS for Blue Belt EMSA Blue Belt project is using the short range coastal tracking system AIS, to provide ship identification and position information. Its coverage is limited to about 40 nautical miles from the coast. The ARTES 20 project is extending this coverage by using satellite detection of AIS: AIS messages transmitted by ships are collected from space, allowing a continuous tracking of the ships with the possibility of worldwide coverage. ESA Unclassified: for Official Use AIS Automatic Identification System Space AIS data provided by the ARTES 20 project are combined with complementary information (ships static data, terrestrial AIS positions, etc) and sent in notification reports to Customs Authorities.
