Galileo in support of sustainable development 14th May 2012 Carlo des Dorides Executive Director European GNSS Agency EISC Workshop Day, Cracow Key role of Galileo in sustainable development • What is sustainable development? Sustainable development is a pattern of economic growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come. • What is the role of Galileo/EGNOS in ensuring sustainable development? Aviation -Decrease in delays and diversions due to EGNOS use in landings reduce fuel burn, CO2 emissions and noise Road -Road tolling systems based on GNSS reduce congestion and pollution -Route planning ensures getting to destination faster, with fuel consumption, CO2 emission and noise reduction -eCall service increases safety on the roads, faster response to dangerous situation limits environmental impact -Precise tracking of dangerous goods transportation minimizes the risk of environmental damages Agriculture -Precision agriculture ensures a better use of the limited arable area by providing higher yields per hectare -Precise spraying of pesticides and fertilizers reduces their environmental impact -Tracking of animal movement by tagging them with receivers (helping not only in agriculture but in wildlife) Maritime -Collision avoidance minimizes the risk of spillages of dangerous substances -Tracking of fishery vessels protects the fish population by avoiding illegal catches Examples of R&D with environmental focus Dangerous goods transportation (Scutum) Extending the lifetime of highways by precise construction of road layers (ATLAS) Precise salt spraying (GoldenIce) Tracking of CO2 emissions in vehicles (OpenCarData project) Prediction of earthquakes (I2GPS project) Rescue operations with GNSS (CloseSearch) What sustainable development really is? “Pattern of economic growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preservingWhat the environment is the sorole of Galileo in that these needs can be met sustainable not only in the present, but development? also for generations to come.„ The word sustainable has been used in too many situations today. Everything contributes to Sustainability! Galileo-EGNOS benefits in aviation Aviation represents 2% of global CO2 emissions* However, the increasing number of flights routes each year, as well as the frequent traffic collapse, have led Europe to take measures, such as the recent inclusion of airlines in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) 4 bn € in Public benefits (2010-27) Fuel Noise CO2 emissions VAT Diversions Cancellations Corporate tax Delays 3.8 0.2 0.1 0.1 0.1 0.0 0.0 0.0 Source: GSA MMFP EGNOS provides significant benefits for passengers, airports, airlines and the environment Decrease in delays and diversions in landings: - Fuel burn - CO2 emissions - Noise *Source: International Energy Agency Galileo benefits ROAD transport Road transport represents about 20% of EU's total emissions of CO2* Galileo provides significant benefits in terms of costs, speed and effectiveness 40 bn € in Public benefits (2010-27) Time savings 6.4 Injuries 5.9 Fuel VAT 2.4 Air pollution 2.0 Climate change 1.1 Corporate tax 0.2 Congestion 0.1 Source: GSA MMFP 21.9 Route planning ensures getting to destination faster Development of road tolling systems reduces congestion Precise tracking of dangerous goods eCall service increases road safety and ensures fast response to dangerous situations Pollution reduction: - Fuel consumption CO2 emissions Impact of environmental accidents Risk of environmental damages *Source: International Energy Agency Galileo benefits in agriculture Galileo provides significant benefits in terms of costs and environmental impact 4 bn € in Public benefits (2010-27) Fertilizers Pesticides Precision agriculture ensures higher yield production Accurate tracking of animal movement with receivers (for farm animals and wildlife) Precise spraying of pesticides and fertilizers 2.6 Better use of arable area and of spraying 0.9 Fuel 0.4 VAT 0.1 Yield 0.0 Corporate tax 0.0 Source: GSA MMFP - Fuel consumption Environmental impact Chemical pollution Time... Galileo benefits in maritime transport Galileo provides significant benefits in terms of costs, security and environmental impact Tracking of fishery vessels protects the fish population Collision avoidance minimizes spillages of substances Manage meteo-forecasting and nowcasting information Decrease of security risks: - Fuel consumption - Environmental accidents - Illegal catches - Life-threats Examples of R&D projects with focus on sustainability SMART-WAY was awarded in Sustainable Transportation (2012) SMART-WAY: Galileo based navigation in public transport systems with passenger interaction. COSMEMOS: Galileo’s meteo-forecasting to reduce Marine fuel consumption & risks COSMEMOS: Galileo added value to commercial fleets (Corsicaferries) and leisure boats Examples of R&D projects on sustainability SCUTUM: Galileo/EGNOS benefits for dangerous goods transports SMART-WAY: Position accuracy & confidence Guarantee for tracking & tracing services ENI is now tracking +200 operating vehicles in Italy, France and Austria GOLDEN-ICE: Galileo’s accuracy in precise salt spreading for road safety GOLDEN-ICE: The large quantities of salt required has environmental impacts and high economical costs A new green solution for highway companies and municipalities daily involved in winter maintenance operations THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION EGNOS, it’s there.
