FAMOUS PEOPLE
LESSON 6:
Mary Seacole, Florence
Nightingale and Edith Cavell
MARY SEACOLE
Mary Seacole was born
in a country called
Jamaica in 1805. Her
father was a Scottish
soldier and her mother
was Jamaican.
MARY SEACOLE
As Mary grew up she learned
many nursing skills from her
mother, who was known as a
‘doctress’, which was a
person who healed the sick
using plants and herbs.
MARY SEACOLE
Mary then spent most of her adult life
caring for people and also becoming a
very successful businesswoman until, in
1854, she decided to go and help injured
British soldiers in a war called the
‘Crimean war’.
MARY SEACOLE
In 1854 she arrived and
set up a hospital called
‘The British Hotel’
which gave injured
soldiers a place to rest
and recover.
MARY SEACOLE
She also visited the
battlefields and
cared for the
soldiers where they
fell, injured.
MARY SEACOLE
Soon, the stories of
Mary’s work became well
known and she became
famous as one of the
women who had saved
many soldier’s lives.

because she saved
the lives of many
British soldiers in
the Crimean war.
INTERESTING FACTS
When people were asked to donate money to
help to look after Mary when she was an
elderly lady, Queen Victoria secretly donated
£50.
50,000 people turned up to celebrate Mary’s
work when a party was held for her in London
after the war.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
Florence Nightingale was
an English nurse in 1853,
at a time when Britain was
fighting a war against
Russia called ‘The
Crimean War’.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
When news started to reach
Britain about the terrible
injuries that soldiers were
suffering, Florence went to
set up a hospital with 38
nurses whom she had
personally trained.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
Soon, Florence and her nurses were
saving many lives because of the
modern methods they used, including
improving the living conditions of the
hospitals to prevent infection from
spreading.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
At night, Florence would
patrol the wards with a
glowing lamp and for
this reason she became
known as ‘the lady with
the lamp.’
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
After the war was over,
Florence helped to start
many nursing colleges to
train new nurses and many
people now call her the
‘Mother’ of modern nursing.

She set up hospitals in
the Crimean war and
saved many soldier’s
lives, becoming known
as ‘The lady with the
lamp.’
INTERESTING FACT
Florence asked the famous engineer,
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to design a
hospital that could be made in England
and sent on a ship to the Crimea, which
was another great success.
EDITH CAVELL
Edith Cavell was
born on the 4th
December 1865 and
spent her life training
to be a nurse.
EDITH CAVELL
In 1914 the First
World War started
and Edith went to
Belgium to help to
nurse the soldiers.
EDITH CAVELL
A soldier in a First
World War hospital
Soon, Belgium was
invaded by the German
army and Edith started
to treat injured soldiers
from both sides, and
also Belgium and French
civilians.
EDITH CAVELL
However, soon the
Germans discovered
that, as well as nursing,
Edith had helped over
200 British soldiers to
escape in secret.
EDITH CAVELL
They said that this
was a ‘war crime’
and sentenced
Edith to death.
EDITH CAVELL
On the 12th
October 1915,
Edith was shot by
a German firing
squad.
EDITH CAVELL
Edith is now
remembered as a very
brave person who
cared for everybody
and who died for her
country.
