Project Background
Delta Infill GSE (Ground Support
Equipment)
Construction of pavement airside at
Melbourne Airport adjacent to international
terminal
Project duration 6 months and value of
4.5M
Initiative Undertaken
 Aurecon design for Delta Infill GSE called for removal of existing
materials to be replaced with 200mm Cement Treated crushed rock
 Within the contract was allowance for disposal of materials in
subgrade
 Negri Contractors tendered alternative design incorporating in-situ
stabilization
 Melbourne Airport Corporation recognised benefits of this proposal
without risk to the design, the quality, it improved safety,
environmental performance, and awarded the contract to Negri
Contractors VIC
Key Points
 Quality Control key to success. Review by Aurecon, results
confirmed suitability of proposal with laboratory testing undertaken
to determine mix design.
 Safety of airport operations at all times critical. Stabilisation was
suitable for night works when airside traffic is significantly reduced.
Utilising existing materials reduced the number of cartage trucks
entering airside. Environmental benefits including reduced cartage
of raw materials to replace removed materials
 Reduction in project schedule. Stabilisation completed in 6 shifts.
Alternative 15 shifts plus off-site treatment for unsuitable subgrade.
Initial 4 week project delay overcome.
Evidence of Success &
Supporting Data
 Productivity – project duration reduced by 2
weeks
 Financial – eliminated need for 6% of the project
value as a provisional item
 Environmental – reuse of potentially
contaminated materials, reduction in raw
material use, eliminated 250 truck movements
 Safety – minimized airplane interaction, and was
completed at night.
