Let’s Make Code!!
We will review hot topics (pros & cons)
2. You can vote on the forms (forms provided)
3. We will tally votes and speak on behalf of NEHES in
Boston
1.
 We also highly recommend you go to Boston to
speak and vote on your behalf (must be NFPA
member to vote).
Proposed Changes to NFPA 101
NEHES Comment Accepted! No Motion expected
Door locking for security reasons, “remote” control of
locks will be defined as must be from within the
locked smoke compartment. (18.2.2.2.6)
1
Proposed Changes to NFPA 99
NEHES Comment Accepted!
Expect Motion on floor to reverse Acceptance
For New, in hospitals, sprinklers shall not be required within
patient room closets 6 square feet or less. (15.8.2) Also
NFPA 101 (18/19.3.5.11)
2
Proposed Changes to NFPA 101
NEHES Comment Rejected
Expect Motion on floor to reverse Rejection
For New Health care occupancies, prohibit all openings
between floors, except for a full atrium with engineered
smoke removal systems. (18.3.1.2)
Proposed Changes to NFPA 101
NEHES Comment Accepted to reject. No Motion expected.
This proposal would
require that inpatient
hospices shall be treated
as nursing homes.
Rejection means that AHJ
can decide, hospices may
not be nursing home
occupancy. NFPA
Committee wanted to
remind NEHES that CMS
“already directs that
hospice be designated as
nursing home.
Proposed Changes to NFPA 99
NEHES Comment Accepted! No Motion expected
For New, Fire alarm system
notification signals
shall readily identify
the smoke zone in
alarm (15.7.4.3.3)
Proposed Changes to NFPA 101
Alcohol-Based Hand-Rub Dispensers, one
dispenser per room and located in that room
will not count against the 10 gal limit for the
smoke compartment.
Proposed Changes to NFPA 101
8 comments on items in corridors, 10 pages fine print
(proposals trying to allow for reality, section 18/19.2.3.4)
Corridor clear width, allow for wheeled items
when 5 feet clear width is unobstructed. And
allow for fixed furniture when 6 feet clear width is
unobstructed. 101-86

Proposed Changes to NFPA 72
 NFPA 72 (2007)
 6.9.10 Relocation and Partial Evacuation
 2-hr CI cable
 2-hr fire rated cable system
 2-hour enclosure
 Performance as approved by AHJ
 Building fully sprinklered in metal raceways
 NFPA 72 (2010)
 24.3.5.4.1 Relocation or partial evacuation, a level 2 or
level 3 pathway survivability shall be required
Proposed Changes to NFPA 72
 Circuits and Pathways - Chapter 12
Survivability has also been assigned "levels" in
recognition that one size does not fit all. For example:
 12.4.1 Pathway Survivability Level 0
 Level 0 pathway shall not be required to have any
provisions of pathway survivability
Proposed Changes to NFPA 72


12.4.2 Pathway Survivability Level 1
12.1.2.7.1 Pathway survivability Level 1 shall consist
of the following:
Pathways in buildings fully protected by an
automatic sprinkler system in accordance with
NFPA 13 and with the interconnecting wiring or
cables installed in metal raceways
Proposed Changes to NFPA 72
 12.4.3 Pathway Survivability Level 2
 Pathway survivability Level 2 shall consist of one or
more of the following:
(1) 2-hour fire rated circuit integrity (CI) cable
(2) 2-hour fire rated cable system (electrical circuit
protective system)
(3) 2-hour fire rated enclosure or protected area or
(3) 2-hour performance alternatives approved by the
authority having jurisdiction
Proposed Changes to NFPA 72
 12.4.3 Pathway Survivability Level 3
 Pathway survivability Level 3 shall consist of pathways
in buildings fully protected with an automatic
sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13 and one
or more of the following:
(1) 2-hour fire rated circuit integrity (CI) cable.
(2) 2-hour fire rated cable system.
(3) 2-hour fire rated enclosure or protected area
(4) 2-hour performance alternatives approved by AHJ.
It’s Time for All of Us to Get
Involved
1. ALL NFPA members
2. Go to Boston for the vote on
June 14 and 15, 2011
3. Support Healthcare on the floor
Your Vote Can Make a Difference
 In 2009, we removed the 5-year requirement for
an obstruction inspection from NFPA 25; the vote
was 43 to 35
 Weekly fire pump test was eliminated with a vote
of 40 to 40
 2009 NFPA 99 was sent back to committee with a
vote of 73 to 50
This Membership alone could blow
those votes out of the water
