Commentary, annotations, illustrative content, etc., added to a previously existing work Agenda What are we covering today in pt. 2: How to construct AAP for compilations of works by one creator - RDA 6.27.1.2 Works Created by One Creator - RDA 6.2.2.10 Preferred Title for a Compilation of Works of One Creator - UCSD Local Practice What will NOT be covered today: Compilations of translations (Language editions) Commentary, annotations, illustrative content, etc., added to a previously existing work Musical works, legal works, religious works, and official communications Identifying Compilations of Works by One Creator Two clues: • It’s a Compilation: a resource contains more than one work • It’s by a Single Creator a resource contains more than one work by the same single creator RDA 6.27.1.2 Constructing AAP for Works Created by One Creator RDA 6.27.1.2 Work Created by One Creator 6.27.1.2 Works Created by One Person, Family, or Corporate Body If: one person, family, or corporate body is responsible for creating the work (see 19.2.1.1), Then: Construct the authorized access point representing the work by combining (in this order) a) the authorized access point representing that person (see 9.19.1), family (see 10.10.1), or corporate body (see 11.13.1), as applicable b) the preferred title for the work (see 6.2.2) What about Compilations of Works by One Creator? You will apply the same instruction: RDA 6.27.1.2 Construct the authorized access point representing the work by combining (in this order): a) b) the authorized access point representing that person (see 9.19.1), family (see 10.10.1), or corporate body (see 11.13.1), as applicable the preferred title for the work (see 6.2.2) Specifically: See RDA 6.2.2.10 for Preferred Title for the compilations of works by one creator What about Compilations of Works by One Creator? RDA 6.2.2.10 Recording the Preferred Title for a Compilation of Works of One Creator RDA 6.2.2.10 Recording the Preferred Title for a Compilation of Works of One Person, Family, or Corporate Body • If a compilation of works is known by a title that is used in resources embodying that compilation or in reference sources, apply the instructions at 6.2.2.4– 6.2.2.5. • For other compilations, apply the instructions at 6.2.2.10.1–6.2.2.10.3, as applicable. RDA 6.2.2.10 When to apply? Is the compilation known by a title? • YES – Apply RDA 6.2.2.4 for works created after 1500: choose as the preferred title the title in the original language by which the work has become known either through use in resources embodying the work or in reference sources – Apply 6.2.2.5 for works created before 1500. • NO, use a conventional collective title (CCT) – Complete works (RDA 6.2.2.10.1): Works – Complete works in a single form (RDA 6.2.2.10.2): Poems, etc. – Other compilations of two or more works (RDA 6.2.2.10.3): • Works. Selections. • Poems (etc.). Selections. RDA 6.2.2.10 When to apply—LC Interpretation • Moved away from LCRI 25.10, no longer ask if it is a distinctive title • Accordingly, LC also modified LC Classification and Shelflising Manual 633 Literary Authors Subarrangement of Works, 1b. Under AACR2: Separate works. Use for individual works, as well as for collections consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that are being published for the first time while the author is still living (disregarding previous publication in journals or periodicals). Under RDA: Separate works. Use for individual works, as well as for collections that have not been assigned an RDA conventional title because the collection has become known by its title. Note: Until 2013, collections consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that were published for the first time while the author was still living (disregarding previous publication in journals or periodicals) were classed as Separate works. That distinction no longer applies. RDA 6.2.2.10: How to Determine “known by a title” So, how do you determine it is known by a title • LC Interpretation (based on its training materials) – Commonly known: Preferred title is already established under its original title – If “this is the first publication of that compilation, do not consider the question of ‘commonly known’ and add a 240 with a conventional collective title.” • UCSD alternative – A compilation consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that is being published for the first time, and – Title is known by its author, publishers, readers, on the web, in a bookstore, etc. RDA 6.2.2.10: how to determine “known by a title” Example 1.
