General
Second only to China in population, India supports nearly 15% of all people on Earth. India is a sub-continent a vast and
varied area and the most populous democracy in the world. Citizens have freely elected their leadership since 1947. The
Taj Mahal is located in India as are many other architectural and artistic masterpieces.
Population
More than 903 million people live in India today. Forty percent of the population is under 15 years old. Ethnically diverse,
72% of the population is Indo-Aryan, 25% is Dravidian, and 2% is Mongoloid. It is often other factors which make up the
divisions among Indian people, e.g., urban versus rural, religion, language, and socio-economic status. India has a
caste system which defines the social hierarchies.
Language
More than 300 languages are spoken in India and 24 of them have more than 1 million speakers. Hindi is the most widelyspoken, followed by English which is the language of business and government. Other important languages include
Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, and Sanskrit.

India is a parliamentary democracy where the Chief Executive is the Prime Minister who is normally the leader of the
Lower House and commands majority in Parliament. He is formally appointed by the President of India who is titular
head of State.

Geography
India has 28 states and seven territories spread across 3.3 million square kilometers. The terrain varies from the Himalayas to
flat river valleys. One fourth of the country is forested and another half is under cultivation.
Climate
The climate varies from temperate to subtropical monsoon. The three basic seasons are: June through September (rainy);
October through February (cool/winter); and March through May (hot/summer.)
Summer temperatures can read 38 degrees Celsius.
Health
Life expectancy is about 60 years. Because of over-population, poverty, malnutrition, and inadequate sanitation, there are
some dis-eases which pose threats. These include cholera, malaria, typhoid, and hepatitis. Health care is not up to
European standards.
Religion
More than 80% of the country is Hindu, 11% are Muslims, 2% Christians, 2% Sikh, with fewer Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis.
Education
School is compulsory and free for those aged six to 14 but India is still trying to meet the challenge to educate its people.
Forty-nine percent of the population is literate.

History
Civilization in the Indus River Valley goes back to 2500 B.C. Aryans arrived from Central Asia around
1500 B.C. and eventually pushed the native Dravidians southward. Several great empires were
established, famous for science, literature, and arts. Arabs, Turks, and Afghan Muslims had a succession of reigns from the 8th to 18th centuries. Portuguese and Dutch arrived for trading but it was
the English who took political control.
Mahatma Gandhi led a nonviolent movement of civil disobedience to protest British rule. India
gained independence from Britain in 1947 although it remains in the British Commonwealth.
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister. Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. Nehru's daughter,
Indira Gandhi, was prime minister from 1966-1977 and then again from 1980 until her assassination in
1984. Her son, Rajiv Gandhi, succeeded her until 1989. Various coalitions have been in power since
then.
When India gained independence, what are now Pakistan and Bangladesh were established as a
separate and Muslim states.

Meals
Foods vary greatly within the Indian subcontinent. Rice is the staple in the south and wheat
bread (roti) is the staple in the north. Indian food is also served with lots of curry in some areas.
Vegetarianism is common, largely for religious reasons. Hindus consider cows sacred therefore
do not eat beef. Muslims do not eat pork, nor drink alcohol.
Eating habits also vary widely within India. In some places traditional families use the right hand,
instead of cutlery, for eating food. Urban families usually use forks, knives, and spoons.
Leisure Time
The Indian film industry is one of the world's largest. People enjoy going to see movies, and also
to dance performances, musical concerts, and theater. Cricket, soccer, and hockey are
popular sports. There are many festivals throughout the year to celebrate religious and historical
events.

Customs
Women dress in sarees, long, beautiful fabric draped in various ways around their bodies. Alternatively, they wear a colorful type
of pants with a knee-length shift.
Hindu women wear a bindi, or red dot, on their foreheads indicating femininity, grace, and marital status though in modern times it
is often more like jewelry, coordinating with the color of a woman's outfit.
The namaste gesture and spoken word are the traditional greeting and used to indicate that one has had enough to eat. (Hands
are pressed together as if in prayer with finger tips just below the chin and a slight bow is made.)

The programme will begin with orientation and then the work will start. The volunteer will normally work for a minimum
of five days a week and 5-7 hours a day. To give the glimpse of the city local sight seeing would also be arranged. At
the end of the programme, the participant would be given a Certificate by the organization/institution where the
volunteer would be placed.

Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. Tourism can be domestic or international, and
international tourism has both incoming and outgoing. Although many of us have been "tourists" at some point
in our lives, defining what tourism actually is can be difficult.
Today, tourism is major source of income for many countries, and affects the economy of both the source and
host countries, in some cases it is of vital importance.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED
Interns who are interested in joining our Tourism program must possess some basic knowledge in tourism field.
VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES
Job responsibilities for Tourism project interns in India vary depending on their interest. They will be working in a
Travel company working either in inbound or outbound tourism. The job may involve designing programming,
costing, marketing and implementation.

Event management is the application of project management to the creation and development
of festivals, Events Conferences, Weddings, Concerts, Seminars, Road Shows, Product
promotions, Fashion Shows & many more novel methods to grab attention.
Event management involves studying the intricacies of the brand, identifying the target
audience, devising the event concept, planning the logistics and coordinating the technical
aspects before actually launching the event. The recent growth of festivals and events as an
industry around the world means that the management can no longer be ad hoc.

Learning a foreign language takes time and dedication.
When you move to a different country or region, learning the local language will help you to communicate and integrate with
the local community.
Many English speakers seem to believe that whenever you go on holiday you can get away by speaking English, so there's no
point in learning any other language. If people don't understand you, all you have to do is speak slowly and turn up the
volume. However, if you want to venture beyond such places, to get to know the locals, to read signs, menus, etc, knowing the
local language is necessary.
Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language with about 545 million speakers, 425 million of whom are native speakers. It is one of the
official languages of India and is the main language used in the northern states of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar
Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar, and is spoken in much of north and central
India alongside other languages such as Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi or Bengali. In other parts of India, as well as in Nepal,
Bangladesh and Pakistan, Hindi is understood, and there is a significant number of Hindi speakers in South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji,
Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and Nepal. In Fiji people of Indian origin speak Hindi, and in some areas the Fijian
people also speak it.
Hindi first started to be used in writing during the 4th century AD. It was originally written with the Brahmi script but since the 11th
century AD it has been written with the Devanāgarī alphabet. The first printed book in Hindi was John Gilchrist's Grammar of the
Hindoostanee Language which was published in 1796.

Shri BAPS Yogiji Maharaj Trust Hospital is a multi specialty hospital
including a special department for alternative medicines known as
NIRAMAY. Niramay…. means healthy, disease free life. This
department deals with the patients interested in Ayurveda,
Naturopathy, Panchkarma, Massage, Magnet therapy and Yoga
therapy. It has two full time Doctors and 110 beds with an averagely
high occupancy.
If you are one who is interested in alternative health care, here is an
opportunity to work in one such hospital. Volunteers can work with
patients and learn interesting aspects of this method of health care.

Ahmedabad is a world heritage city and home to the famous Sabarmati Ashram inhabited by Mahatma
Gandhi where he lived and worked towards the independence movement. It is also one of the important

The volunteer will have an opportunity to work with well known and experienced doctors and r medical

NATURE WITH ORGANIC FARMING
The world is going BACK TO NATURE and this program is aimed at giving
Back to Nature what we slowly and surely destroyed with excessive industrialization.
Organic or Herbal farming involves using natural techniques to yield good and healthy crops by methods which do not harm the natural environment or
the people who live in, work on and consume the produce.
Over the years Botanicals and other natural products have been substituted by wholly synthetic drugs, food additives, chemical dyes, pesticides, and
other man made products. This trend has been somewhat reversed in the late 20th Century, as shown by expanding interest in organic farming
methods .This renewed focus consists of rediscovery and re-evaluation of our pre- industrial herbal heritage, along with new interest in beneficial plants
as renewable, biodegradable, and less-toxic resources.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: This program will give the participant in-depth, hands-on experience on farms using organic techniques. It will also give the
participant knowledge of various plants grown and their nutritive and medicinal values.

“BENARAS is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together"
quoted Mark Twain . “Varanasi” as it is now renamed is an experience in itself. It is the HOLY CITY on the banks of the river Ganges,
the oldest city in India and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of the world.
The morning sun shimmering across the Holy Ganges, the high banks lined with temples and shrines, the soul stirring hymns, the
fragrance of Incense lingering in the atmosphere, the scores of devotees thronging the shores for a refreshing dip to cleanse them
of their sins …… Breathtaking is the only word to describe this city.
However it is only natural that amidst this ancient society breed several social problems arising from racism, sexism, superstition and
conflict between old and new. So arises the need for Social welfare and this is our program. Social Welfare concerned with
the quality of life, quality of the environment, level of crime, availability of essential social services, as well as religious and spiritual
aspects of life.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
To deal with the social welfare of this city steeped in tradition and superstition with the influx of millions of devotees throughout the
year,
we have prepared this program “BENARAS” to give the volunteers the experience of “Benares” and in turn receive from them their

FARIDABAD
History
Faridabad, the south-eastern district in the state of Haryana, was founded in 1607 AD by Sheikh
Farid a.k.a., Baba Farid, treasurer of Jahangir and a Sufi saint, with the object of protecting the
highway which passed through the town. Sheikh Farid built a fort, a tank and a mosque which
are now in ruins. Later on, it became the headquarters of a Pargana which was held in jagir by
Ballabgarh ruler. Faridabad District came into existence on 15th of August, 1979 as the 12th
district of the state. Faridabad District was carved out from erstwhile Gurgaon District.
As a part of Pakistani Refugee Resettlement Project after the Partition, light industrial
development was initiated in the town in 1950. Thus, refugees laid down the initial infrastructure of
the present Faridabad.

NAGPUR
Nagpur is the winter capital of the state of Maharashtra,
a fast growing metropolis and third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. With a
population of 2,405,421 (2011) Nagpur Metropolitan Area is the 13th largest urban conglomeration in
India. It has also recently been ranked as the cleanest city and the second greenest city of India .
In addition to being the seat of annual winter session of Maharashtra state assembly "Vidhan Sabha",
Nagpur is also a major commercial and political center of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, and is
also famous throughout the country as "Orange City" for being a major trade center of oranges that
are cultivated in the region.
In addition, the city also derives political importance from being the headquarters for the RSS and an
important location for the Dalit Buddhist movement.

Home for aged & handicapped persons situated at Unthkhana (Govt. Medical, Nagpur)
VOLUNTEER TASK
Participants may assist in providing physical assistance and rehabilitation including through physiotherapy,
electro therapy, and occupational therapy, wax therapy etc. to polio paralyzed handicapped children in age
group of 5yrs to 18yrs. These children may also be taught various crafts, art, music, and dances for their all round
development. There are sisters /staff who are attending the handicapped children, but may require better
touch of humanity.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Basic knowledge and willing to serve with care polio/physical-ly handicapped children of age below 20yrs in
developing them in the field of interest.

Hyderabad
The city of smiles, of lights, of a thousand faces, endearingly called the Pearl City, Hyderabad
offers a variety of tourist attractions ranging from Heritage monuments, Lakes and Parks,
Gardens and Resorts, Museums to delectable cuisine and a delightful shopping experience. To
the traveller, Hyderabad offers a fascinating panorama of the past, with a richly mixed cultural
and historical tradition spanning 400 colourful years. Some of the tourist attractions include...
The Charminar is as much the signature of Hyderabad as the Taj Mahal is of Agra or the Eiffel
Tower is of Paris. Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, built Charminar in 1591
at the centre of the original city layout. It is said to be built as a charm to ward off a deadly
epidemic raging at that time. Four graceful minarets soar to a height of 48.7 m above the
ground. Charminar has 45 prayer spaces and a mosque in it. Visitors can view the architectural
splendour inside the Charminar. The monument is illuminated in the evenings and a
pedestrianisation project around the monument is under implementation.

In the family of God, the visually challenged children are special members in it. You can contribute towards their
development by giving them your time, sensitivity and willingness to help them. Your time and motivation will make them
realize their skill to make something special happen.
The Devnar school for the Blind, located in Hyderabad, has children from 5 years to 17 years, who despite their challenges,
excel in many fields.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
This program will give the participant experience in understanding the true spirit in which a blind child lives in, despite the
odds, and give an opportunity to spend time with them in storytelling, helping in games, teaching music, recording cassettes,
helping with the computers, etc.
VOLUNTEER TASK:
Volunteers will visit the school, spend time with the school children and help them in various activities during week days.
During weekends, they can learn Thanjavur Painting (as an addon activity), an ancient art of painting which originated in
Thanjavur in India during the Maratha period in the 16th century. Thanjavur paintings basically signify paintings created using
a specific style and technique.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Tremendous patience, an interest in helping special children and willingness to work with them.

Just 40 kms away from Kullu to the north Himachal Pradesh, Manali is situated near the end of the valley on the
National Highway leading to Leh. The landscape here is breath taking. One sees well-defined snow capped
peaks, the Beas river with its clear water meanders through the town. On the other side are deodar and pine
trees, tiny fields and fruit orchards. It is an excellent place for a holiday, a favorite resort for trekkers to Lahaul, Spiti,
Bara Bhangal (Kangra), and Zanskar ranges. From temples to antiquity, to picturesque sight-seeing spots and
adventure activities, Manali is a popular resort for all seasons and for all travellers.
Approach
Rail: Nearest convenient rail head are at Chandigarh and Pathankot. Manali can be reached from road from
these stations.
Road: Manali is well connected by road with Delhi, Ambala, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Haridwar, Shimla,
Dharamsala and Chamba/Dalhousie. Regular buses ply between these stations. It is connected with Leh during
July to October.

The people of Kullu believe in simple living and perseverance. The customs and rituals practiced in the valley depict the simple
lifestyle of the natives, living close to Nature. There is a rich tradition of folk arts in Kullu. The excellent temple carvings, vibrant
handicrafts, spectacular folk dances and melodious songs show the sensitivity of the people. The exquisitely build temples, castles,
and forts are the monuments of an advanced form of architecture and sculpture that flourished in the valley in past. The artisans of
Kullu valley preserve a rich heritage of handlooms and handicrafts. There is an amazing range of beautiful handloom and handicraft
products in Kullu. The traditional brilliant colours of the Handlooms probably manifest people's zest for life and creation.
Visit to Malana, a remote village, situated at a height of 2520 m, and believed to be one of the oldest existing Republics, will take you
into a historical nostalgia. The villagers strictly follow their ancient beliefs, culture, customs and religion.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
This program will give the participant experience various activities with the local village school with children. The participants will be
able to understand the traditional culture of the people living in the breathtaking Himalayan mountainous region of Kullu Manali.
They will also gave knowledge of various arts inherent to the Kullu valley and a hands-on experience to learn the art.
VOLUNTEER TASK:
Volunteers will spend time with the school children and teach them to speak English, during the week days, visit the local tribes and
learn their art and culture. During weekends, they can go for small treks to be amidst the breathtaking mountains or even visit nearby
villages to learn their traditional lifestyle.

Kullu-Manali is bounded by two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges, the Great
Himalaya and the Karakoram, and lies athwart two other, the Ladakh range and
the Zanskar range. It offers a panoramic lap of nature parallel to river Beas.
It takes 12-13 hours by overnight luxury bus to reach Manali.
