ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
• It makes use if organs that
would otherwise be wasted.
• It gives people a chance to
help others.
• It saves lives.
•It can improve a persons
quality of life.
• It comforts families who
have lost a loved one.
•Although expensive – it
saves money in the long run as
it cuts down on lengthy
medical care.
• It can cause the recipient
to feel guilt as someone had
to die so they can live.
• It is an expensive
procedure.
• There is a limit to who it
can help.
• It can cause loved ones to
feel resentment as they have
lost someone but someone
else has been able to live.
•It is not natural.
•Life expectancy after a
transplant is lower than
normal so it is not worth it.

Grade B
Most will be able
to EXPLAIN
some of the
advantages and
disadvantages of
organ donation.
Almost 675,000 more
people pledged to help
others after their death
by registering their wishes
on the NHS Organ Donor
Register, bringing the total
to 17,751,795
(March 2011).
Although this figure is rising it is still less than
a 3rd of the population.
Why do you think there are so few organ
donators in the UK?
In Spain they have an opt out system for Organ
Transplantation – unless you choose to opt out your
organs are automatically allowed to be donated when
you die.
In the UK we have an opt in system. For someone's
organs to be donated they must register and make it
clear that this is what they want. They can even choose
which organs they would like to donate.
Which system do you think is better and why?
Everyone in the UK should be made
to register as an organ donor!
