Joint Research Centre (JRC) Cittadella della Scienza e della Natura The JRC, was originally established in 1957 and is the third biggest in Europe. It provides independent scientific and technical advice to the European Commission to support a wide range of EU policies. The Italian Ispra site management (ISM) Directorate is responsible for the site management and for the nuclear decommissioning, safety, security and protection. The JRC has been chosen to coordinate the participation of the European Commission to the Milan Expo because of its strong scientific and technical competence in the Expo theme and the proximity of JRC’s Ispra site to Varese. In the Natural Park of Campo dei Fiori, the Centre La Cittadella, home of the Astronomical Society of G.V. Clothing, textiles, leather goods and food and wine specialities are just some of the products you can find in the city centres of Varese and numerous outlets spread throughout the region. 20 Markets and trade fairs Main Factory Outlets in Varese province There are numerous markets and trade fairs in the area, but the Fiera del Cardinale of Castiglione Olona and the Luino Market should be cited for their particularity. Clothing The Fiera del Cardinale is held in the stunning, characteristic medieval centre of Castiglione Olona on the first Sunday of every month (from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and is one of the main markets for used items and antiques in the province of Varese and probably all of Lombardy. Numerous sellers (more than one hundred) contribute to the success of the market, which draws around 20,000 visitors. The Luino Market began in the first half of the sixteenth century and is still held in the city centre today. It features 374 market stalls. The markets attracts visitors from all over: coaches arrive from Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and, of course, Switzerland, and special ferry trips are arranged for visitors coming from the opposite bank of Lago Maggiore and from Locarno. The merchandise up for sale is up-to-date with the times.
