Diversification and entrepreneurial wit are two of the keywords for describing the productive world of Varese.
Some 60 thousand companies, comprising a workforce of some 267 thousand, are distributed among the
tertiary and manufacturing sectors, thus offering the province a vast array of products and services. The
manufacturing sector alone accounts for more than 9 thousand businesses, established in a network where
large companies can rely on the professionalism and flexibility of smaller ones, interchanging expertise and
ideas. Key industrial sectors are of course textile, but also mechanical engineering and aerospace.

Varese, the perfect home ground

The extensive entrepreneurial history of the territory
is made up of significant multinationals; namely,
Agusta Westland, Bticino, Whirlpool, Alenia

of small and medium-size businesses and craft
workshops : 53 businesses per sq Km (an average of
34 in Lombardy and a National average of 17).
Over time, through a series of spin-offs and cooperation, the Province of Varese has become a
major seat of production where large companies
could rely on the professionalism and flexibility of
smaller ones, interchanging expertise and ideas,
transferring technology; consequently, a tight
network involving the chain of supply and strategic
outsourcing has been developed.
Accordingly, new companies are now able to rely on
a manifold of productive experiences in a province
balanced between modernity and tradition.
Certainly, Varese has been able to preserve
historical industries; namely textile, mechanical
engineering, aerospace, but also to differentiate
its production, seizing new opportunities

Varese is near the Expo
venue; it holds a strategic
position that makes it
prime location: within a
few kms, it offers great
availability of spaces
to be used as offices,
warehouses, residential
units or exhibition areas.
The Varese system is keen to be a
benchmark for the participant countries
both while preparing and during Expo
2015.
Varese, relying on its technical and
professional skills, is able to provide
technical support of another league,
thanks to:
 the presence of companies from
manufacturing, construction, Hi-Tech,
and logistic sectors;
 the professional skills of companies
active in the fields of communication,
event planning, design, and many
more;
 the presence of business services, skilled
staff and high-end professionals;

employed as offices, warehouses,
exhibition areas very close to the Expo
Venue for supervising activities during
the Universal Exposition;

dedicated to smooth any operation
connected to the establishment of
the delegation (finding working
spaces and residential units, research
of professional partners, supply of
products and services, suggestions for
leisure).

Varese: a culture of excellence
Varese has always invested in areas such as training and centers of excellence to support sustainable
development necessary to strengthen employment growth and scientific research.
Joint Research Centre (JRC)
Cittadella della Scienza e della Natura
The JRC, was originally established in 1957
and is the third biggest in Europe. It provides
independent scientific and technical advice to
the European Commission to support a wide
range of EU policies. The Italian Ispra site
management (ISM) Directorate is responsible
for the site management and for the nuclear
decommissioning, safety, security and protection.
The JRC has been chosen to coordinate the
participation of the European Commission to the
Milan Expo because of its strong scientific and
technical competence in the Expo theme and the
proximity of JRC’s Ispra site to Varese.
In the Natural Park of Campo dei Fiori, the
Centre La Cittadella, home of the Astronomical
Society of G.V. Schiapparelli, conducts studies on
territorial atmospheric phenomena and provides
useful information to develop environmental
protection plans.

Together with its strong entrepreneurial activity, our
region is one of Italy’s great tourist destinations. First
and foremost, Lago Maggiore, but also historic Lombard
tourist sites, the small lakes of Varesotto and the west
bank of Lake Lugano.
The province of Varese is set in the splendid frame of the
foothills of the Alps toward Campo dei Fiori and Sacro
Monte, a site recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage
list for its historical, natural and environmental value.
And much, much more...
Varese and
sport tourism
The province of Varese offers a
wide array of opportunities for
enjoying land sports in diverse
environments—ranging
from
the mountains to the plains—
water sports, thanks to its seven
lakes, and air sports, in part due
to the area’s world-recognised
historic passion and aptitude for
aeronautic design.
Rowing
Rowing has enjoyed a long,
prestigious sporting tradition
in the region, stretching back
to the late nineteenth century,
thanks to the ideal climatic and
technical conditions of Lake
Varese.
Cycling
With more than 100 km of
bicycle paths, Varese is ranked
third among Italian provinces
for the extent of its trails.
Trekking
excursions of various levels and
intensities, from simple walks in
the woods to challenging climbs,
hikes leading to stupendous
panoramic views of the Alps and
fun horseback rides.
Golf

courses, all perfectly integrated
with the natural environment,
distinctive for its lush greenery
and hilly terrain.

and cultural tourism
The province of Varese is also distinguished for its cultural offer. The strong artistic-cultural
profile of the region has been confirmed by the inclusion of no fewer than four of its sites on
the UNESCO World Heritage list, including Monte San Giorgio, the prehistoric lake sites of
the arc of the foothill of the Alps
(Biandronno, with the Museo Civico Preistorico and Parco Archeologico Isolino Virginia and Bodio omnago,
Cadrezzate with its Sabbione Lake Dwelling) and the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte in Varese. The
province of Varese is also considered the capital of art nouveau style. At the beginning of the twentieth
century, Varese was elected a ‘noble hamlet’ for its numerous villas in the art nouveau architectural style.
Villas that are still today splendidly preserved, surrounded by their vast parks in testimony to a glorious
past. Next to the villas one finds medieval castles and fortresses, imposing works of monumental art that
frame the landscape. Special mention is merited by the Rocca Borromeo, which was built on a rocky spur
right on the shores of Lago Maggiore.
Varese
shopping
Shopping in Varese is an easy
alternative for spending your free
time. Varese is synonymous with
big names as well as excellent shops
and opportunities for discovering niche products.
Clothing, textiles, leather goods and food and wine
specialities are just some of the products you can
find in the city centres of Varese and numerous
outlets spread throughout the region.

Markets and trade fairs
Main Factory Outlets in Varese province
There are numerous markets and trade fairs in
the area, but the Fiera del Cardinale of Castiglione
Olona and the Luino Market should be cited for
their particularity.
Clothing
The Fiera del Cardinale is held in the stunning,
characteristic medieval centre of Castiglione Olona
on the first Sunday of every month (from 8 a.m. to 7
p.m.), and is one of the main markets for used items
and antiques in the province of Varese and probably
all of Lombardy. Numerous sellers (more than one
hundred) contribute to the success of the market,
which draws around 20,000 visitors.
The Luino Market began in the first half of the
sixteenth century and is still held in the city centre
today. It features 374 market stalls. The markets
attracts visitors from all over: coaches arrive from
Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and, of course,
Switzerland, and special ferry trips are arranged
for visitors coming from the opposite bank of Lago
Maggiore and from Locarno. The merchandise up
for sale is up-to-date with the times. The market is
held every Wednesday from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
