About us The Mediterranean City of Sciences in Bari is a permanent structure built in order to interest young people and the wider community in science and technology. Its main purpose is to develop insight into the applications and relevance of science and technology in the development of both the individual and society. The Mediterranean City of Sciences is part of the following international networks: Ecsite (European Collaborative for Science, Industry and Technology Exhibitions): a European network of all the organizations engaged in scientific communication for promoting a hands-on approach to scientific and technological development. Try Science: TryScience.org gives you the opportunity to appreciate contemporary science and technology by interacting on-line and off-line with other scientific centres situated in different parts of the world. Masad (Mediterranean Association for Science Advancement and Dissemination): an association engaged in strengthening the collaboration and scientific and technological communication among Mediterranean countries. The City of Sciences' main goals are: • To promote and exchange scientific and technological know-how in the field of mathematics, physics, natural science and derived technologies between Apulia and other Mediterranean countries. • To contribute to the safeguard and enhancement of the technological and scientific heritage of historical interest kept in various sites of the University of Bari and Apulia and open the same to the appreciation of the young generation. • To encourage the spread of techno-scientific knowledge in emergent countries of the Mediterranean region so as to facilitate their socio-economic development, with the aid of the Community of Mediterranean Universities (CMU). In this perspective, all our projects aim at: • Promoting techno-scientific knowledge in schools of all grades by favouring a better use of scientific laboratories and multimedia devices. Special attention is given to projects which may encourage academic research and production so as to increase awareness of the relevance of science and technology in improving quality of life and sustainable social development. • Encouraging a systematic organization of scientific and technological historical finds kept in Apulia. This collection includes bibliographic and documentary resources which are relevant for historic research in the development of science and technology. • Developing the research and testing of innovative methods for a more effective teaching of both science and the history of science. Particular focus is given on the use of new technologies. • Promoting the spread of scientific and historico-scientific information at a regional, national and international level through a series of exhibits, meetings, editorial and multimedia projects. • Promoting education and professional refresher courses through the collaboration with other Universities and Italian and foreign institutions, for the management of museums and the cities of science. Visitors can also carry out some simple experiments by using instruments and images from Apulia museums and local sites such as Le Saline di Margherita di Savoia and Castellana Grotte. At the end of the visit, workshops are provided on the subject of water which is a very interesting issue for the South of Italy and, in particular, for Apulia. The Mediterranean City of Sciences houses temporary exhibitions and events. Appearance and reality In this area interactive exhibits show optical illusions and "classic" experiments such as the Newton Disc and the Mechanical Paradox which enable visitors to understand the importance of verifying what is real and what is apparent.
