SET project – The 4x4 Challenge! The Washwood Phoenix’s Aims Team members work together to design, research, build and project manage a radio controlled 4-wheel-drive (4x4 ) vehicle to set specifications. The vehicle must successfully negotiate a specially designed test track that will emulate that of real life and what a full scale 4x4 vehicle can do. Objectives of the project The ambition of the project is to raise awareness, interest and enthusiasm in Engineering through the practical application of Design and Technology, Mathematics and Science. The Team Yusuf Hussain (year 9) Majid Hussain (year 9) Mahdi Hussein (year 9) Junaid Yasin (year 9) Henna Attique (year 10) Mariam Jamil (year 10) Hadjer Baiai (year 10) Ammiya Batool (year 10) Mariya Tofieq (year 10) Team Manager – Mariya I am responsible for managing the team, ensuring that the project is completed on time and working closely with all members of the team, offering assistance where necessary. “I have helped in deciding the job roles and the name of the team with the rest of the team”. Design Engineer - Majid I am in charge of the styling, performance and ability of the vehicle. I liaised with the manufacturing engineer (Junaid) to ensure ideas can be realised. “I have worked with Junaid in the engineering of the car and coming with the final design”. Manufacturing engineering - Junaid I am responsible for advising team members on the manufacture of the car and any possible ideas and constraints in its production. “I have been able to advise the others on how the car the works and the advantages and constraints of a 4x4”. Resources Manager –Ammiya, Mariam and Hadjer We have organised time, materials and equipment for designing and making the vehicle. We have also developed ideas for the marketing (presentation) of our vehicle. We liaised with all members of the team to check that were progressing on time and offered our help if it was needed. “We have brought structure to the project and more creativity!” Sponsors – Henna I chose this particular role because I feel I have the appropriate skill sets for this job. I have strong communication skills and my literacy skills are very strong to persuade businesses to become our sponsors. “I am a live character full of energy and like the challenge of recruiting businesses as sponsors” Graphic designer – Yusuf and Mahdi We are responsible for producing the colour schemes applied to the vehicle. We liaised with the design engineer to ensure schemes would fit with the shape of the vehicle. Electronics Simple sample circuit Prototype and final design Manufacture complete! Team image/branding The one thing we all have in common is our passion and enthusiasm for cars and everything engineering! We also have a strong belief that the future is all about Science, Engineering and Technology! From this project we now have a common goal to pursue a career in SET! What have we gained from being involved with the project? We have gained an insight into how companies design and engineer products. An open mind into different careers. Having a career in this field. Having met women in SET has got rid of misconceptions about SET career paths. “Its not a mans world” – SET careers are available to all. We have had the opportunity to travel to European countries that we wouldn’t have travelled to. Better understanding of how important it is to have a European language. Recognise how multicultural the UK is in relation to the foods available, and are more appreciative of it now. We have had the opportunity to become more independent! “No one person is more important than the other! “ – Team moto
