CREATING CENTRES OF
EXCELLENCE
Prof. Vaiva Lesauskaite,
Vice-rector for Research
Lithuanian University of Health Sciences
The Aarhus Declaration 2012:
Towards European Research Area of Excellence
 It is essential that Europe strengthens its science base, with
excellence as the guiding principle.
 EUROPE must build on and support national excellence
initiatives to educate and nurture talent in order to produce and
attract top researchers
Teaming for excellence and innovation
Teaming of excellent research institutions and low
perfoming RDI regions
Objective:
The creation of new centres of excellence in low
performing RDI Member State and regions or significant
upgrade of existing ones
Creation of Stairways to excellence
It means:
Investment must be targeted.
Excellence tends to emerge particular areas or
fields, involving highly-concentrated effort.
There is a critical mass effect.
