My Impressions
Small low density towns where space isn’t an issue
Cars the most popular means for getting around
Cycling most popular among tourists, little in the
way of marked cycle routes in smaller towns
Lots of measures to slow car-traffic
Opportunity for cycling in your generally flat towns
Some ideas for Höfn etc. are below in the slide notes
Your Plans and Activities…
2014: OUR STREETS, OUR CHOICE
In Essence: Reallocating street space to improve
quality of urban life for citizens
Why? Vehicles occupy the majority of non-occupied
public space, yet 30% citizens don’t have cars!
Actions: convert car-parking space  mini parks;
streets  adopt community activities within
thoroughfares  cafés/al fresco dining
More Ideas: ped/bike infrastructure + workplace/
school travel planning + city walking/bike tours
+ car-sharing/car-pooling
Long-term solutions; ‘Traffic Evapouration;’ e.g.
Kajaani, FI: access restrictions; improved PT
Challenges: Citizen/media/retailer objection
Remedies: Dialogue, Science, Political Allies
