2012 International Fire Code Adopted as the minimum fire safety standard by the State of Wyoming City of Sheridan must adopt the minimum standard to retain local authority. City of Sheridan has held local code enforcement authority since 1989 2012 International Fire Code • All construction requirements for existing buildings have been consolidated in Chapter 11 • Other building maintenance requirements are in spread throughout the code 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1103.2 Emergency responder radio coverage – Requires existing building to provide equipment necessary to allow fire and other emergency services to communicate when inside the building 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1103.3 Elevator operation – Requires elevators that travel more than 25 feet, (3 floors) to be equipped with emergency operation. Firefighter phase 1 and 2 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1103.7 Fire alarm systems – A fire alarm system shall be installed in all Educational occupancies over 1000 ft² or has an occupant load of 50 or more – A fire alarm system shall be installed in all motels more than 1 story, apartments more than 2 stories, boarding houses, and assisted living facilities 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1103.8 Single- and multi-station smoke alarms – Single station smoke alarms are required in all residential occupancies 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1103.9 Carbon Monoxide Alarms – All residential occupancies are required to have carbon monoxide alarms – At least one detector on each floor level • Exception: Buildings with no fuel burning appliances and no attached garage 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1104.3-1105.5 Exit lights and emergency lighting – Exit lights with battery backup and emergency egress lighting is required for • Retail stores over 3000 ft² or more than 1 story • Assembly occupancies with an occupant load over 50 • Motels and hotels over 1 story 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 1104.6 Fire escape stairs – Fire escape stair assemblies are required to be inspected for structural adequacy by a licensed engineer every 5 years. 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 604.5 Emergency lighting equipment – Building owners are required conduct monthly and annual tests of the emergency lighting equipment and keep records for 3 years. 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 607.5 Standardized fire service elevator keys – Building owners are required to modify their elevator controls to accept a standard elevator key that activates the fire service function 2012 International Fire Code • IFC 703.1 Maintenance – Requires the building owner to conduct annual inspection of fire and smoke rated building components. (Walls, doors, dampers, etc.) Owner shall cause any discrepancies to be repaired 2012 International Fire Code • IFC Chapter 8 Interior finish – Table 803.3 provides detailed requirements for the flame resistance of wall, ceiling and floor coverings for all buildings.
